Came back from a weekend trip. My neighbor told me downstairs, that he owns two old (HIFI) speakes, out of use. If I like them I can pick them up for free. I told him: Well lets do it right now. Now I am the owner of mint conditioned pair of NS10s.

The mentality with the ns10's is, they are so ugly, that if you can make it sound good on them, it will sound good on everything, there is absolute truth in the saying, but it just takes the fun out of listening for me, they are hard edged man.

It's funny every major studio owner I have asked why NS10Ms? Has answered they were cheap so everybody bought them!

That's the explaination that I was aware of; the other is that they were so ubiquitous that people just knew what they sounded like, so they could go from studio to studio and achieve the same sound because the the NS-10s were a reference.

I sold mine 3 years ago. I used them with an old Speaker City sub. I miss them. Sell them to me!

I never worked with NS10s they are that bad? People pay crazy prices for them on ebay. The Ns-10s were bright and found the need for tissue paper over the tweeters. You could hang some over them with tape. They even came out with a plastic ring that went around the tweeter and held the tissue in place. They also L & R weren't a mirror image of each other. They solved both problems with the NS-10Ms studio version. I have a pair of "M"s with a sub woofer powered by an Adcom amp. I fused the tweeters after paying $220.00 to replace them and recapped the cross-overs, with made a large difference in overall sound. Now Very usable.

It's a love hate thing, but if you start with a sub and slowly take it away like training wheels you'll eventually just know when the low-end is right on NS10s. The transient response is dead on, so if you've got it slamming on them it's going to kick ass anywhere you play it. They're really fun to mix on if you've got good source material. If you're having to work on crappy recorded stuff you might take a shotgun to them though, fair warning.
Nice find!

A bad mix sounds even more bad on them, good mixes shine on them, super clear image. A too big base range makes them sound fucked up. I think I would not mix all the time on them, but I can imagine that consumers used something like it. I think they are great for getting a different perspective.

I was offered a free pair of NS-10's and said no thanks. I owned them and used them every day for 10 years when I had my home studio. That says something right there. You want something like an NS-10? Try the Adam A7X, same kind of thing, but better.

hmmm, never heard of ns10's being referred to as "bassy' I think he means if you have a bad mix in the low mids, the ns10's let you know. Yupp Sorry for that one. I AB d today between the Genelec 8040 and the NS 10. I think the NS 10 is good for getting a first good lower and upper mid balance, later I switch back to the Genelecs. I liked the Behritones for this in the past but the NS10 has a better image. With sub I can imagine that some people use the NS 10 for mixing. But I would not monitor too loud on them.
