co's like digikey/analog devices? It's 2015, but their F-d up websites can't give you a solid price upon checkout, it's always some BS that ends up costing you about $75 more than you'd expected, and always AFTER you confirm the order! The real irk is the fact that i'm in Cali, and they are NOT, they have exactly 0 business charging me a red cent of tax on items unless they are also in Cali, this is the way it is with virtually every single one of the other 1,000's of transactions i've made on the net, including overseas purchases. does anyone know how they get away with this BS? Even if they just charged the damn fantasy tax and gave me a finished price UPON CHECKOUT..., it would at least be poked in the eye acceptable, but the surprise charge is a sandy dick in the ass shocker while you're sleeping PO! haha! sorry, i just got jacked by these sniffers.....

Maybe they have a warehouse or something in Cali. Amazon has a distro center or something in MA, but nothing in RI, so if I have things shipped home, I get taxed, but not at work.

If you used a credit card, you can cancel the payment, right? Send the company a notice..

I do believe they have a sales office some where in California, that would explain the sales tax, the pricing I don't get.

I buy from Digikey/Mouser/Newark/etc almost every week. I always get a straight price on checkout.. I dunno what is happening with your orders..
But yes, they collect taxes from states that either require it (cali does) or that have some presence of their business in that state.
And technically, any purchase you make on the internet that does not charge tax, you are by law required to report that purchase and pay local/state sales tax on that purchase..
Of course, nobody does this and there isn't a way to police this without spending more than they'd make in tax revenue..
However, the Marketplace Fairness Act is soon to get put into law, which will require each company to collect tax based on the state on shipment.

Due to threats by CA AG Kamala-toe Harris (the best looking AG according to our president), many out of state mail order co's are now charging California sales tax. Most larger companies have been put on notice and are now collecting state sales taxes directly.
Since the sales tax rates vary county to county and even city to city, they cannot calculate the actual sales taxes until you complete the order and supply an address. If all of this seems too Big Brother, one can apply for a California resale certificate from the State Board of Equalization.

The point is, they need to let the customer know up front what the final final price is. it's just poor business practice not to. They're in a niche industry where customers actively rate their products and services ..and before they get the product, they have a bad customer service experience?

I e-mailed them once about their presence in California and they replied they had an office in San Rafael, Ca. Besides, California Needs the tax money ( they currently have a surplus after imposing billions in taxes last year) to built the bullet train to nowhere.

This ^ is EXACTLY the point, just give me the damn price, I don't know what your experience is svart , but it's not at all mine, i get emails after the fact telling me the NEW price, and it's always more than what i guess from mouser, digikey types, and it always chaps my ass. I actually try to avoid the co's that do this, you'd think i'm not the only one, so it HAS to hurt them.?.? How many guys put off buying things because you know you're going to get hammered on shipping as well? I've had projects sitting untouched for no other reason than i can't afford to pay $20 shipping on 30 cent capacitor that can fit into an envelope, so i try to "need" more to justify the stupid expensive shipping. Again, I wish they'd just gimme the damn final price and stop dicking me around.

I picked up a 3 way switch not too long ago and the shipping was like $9 or something. I can buy a 75lb amp from some retailer and get it shipped free though, go figure.

That's why I try to buy heavy items from co's that offer free shipping, it saves a lot some items, like speakers or ammo even. Small items will have shipping plus 'handling' charges added with some companies. If you think about it, the labor rates don't make the processing of that small stuff profitable for smaller companies without a little extra added in.
I'm just glad I can get some of this stuff at all, we take these convieniences for granted some times.

Yeah, I gripe about the shipping from Digi-key too (and Stew-Mac), but when I ask for components locally, they look at me like I'm crazy. No other options here.

I totally get the anger about finding the final price of a deal *after* you already bought it. In germany, beeing intransparent about a final price including all fees, taxes and shipping before the purchase is finalized from the buyer's side is not just considered bad business practice, but simply against the law. I guess digikey also sells internationally and also to Germany (I never bought from them), so i guess they should be pretty capable of fulfilling such a minor system task that is considered fair and good business practice all around the globe...
