Fellas, let's remember where we are, Real Gear, not Gearslutz. I always hated that name. Martin what are you talking about? you should probably save this kind of remark for something that is actually deserving of it, the posts on this thread are completely reasonable by all involved, their is nothing wrong with lively debating a disagreement, nobody involved here posted an insult toward anyone..., except maybe your unwarranted reprimand toward all of us?

I wish I could hear more comparisons of these two mics, this is a great post, and helpful to me in lots of ways.

Martin I'm pretty sure I've got a bunch of different examples - just need to find some that I recorded flat.

I love that, but I've got some sad news my friend, you probably won't believe this, but I sold my pride and joy to Herbie last week. I had some serious wolves at the door, and couldn't think of anyone more deserving of that rare gem than our own cowboycoalminer.

Just to chime in on pricing, my SR CV4 mod was in the neighborhood of the prices quoted here, and I'm incredibly happy with it every time I put it up. To have someone with his skills and tools spend a few days dialing/skinning/machining your mic to your sound specifications with microscopic adjustments - totally worth it.
Btw - JK, your mic is now a classic. Sounds incredible.

Wow.. I paid right at 800$ for everything for my U47, including blueline, AMI transformer, etc. I didn't opt for the extreme perfect clone, but it is just a mic.. A damn good one. Best mic I've ever used on vocals for sure.

I have a rather nice MK47/blueline (nice at least inside haha), when i built JK's mic i was expecting it to be about the same really, it wasn't the same, it was very certainly of a higher quality all together, we're not talking black n white differences, but it had a very solid and finished sound to it that is hard to explain. I have a MKU47 here waiting to be built, i have to pay off some debts before i can even buy the PSU parts to finish her up... sadly...

When you have a great mic, you know it. Once I did a session with a mint, vintage C12, and I sang better than ever, it just complemented my voice in a way I haven't heard again. I've heard cowboy's MKU-47 quite a bit by now, and that mic's got it, whatever "it" is.
Unfortunately, when it's not quite right, even if it's really good, it never stops bugging you. At least in my case it hasn't.

Ewww, cat5 treading dangerously close to the "it's not the gear, it's the song/performer" argument haha

I remember him tracking something through an SM7 just to show why he didn't like it. It still sounded great! He's got the velvet.

The conversation about prices of 47's is comparing 3 different builds so may be confusing?
Max has 2 kits as Tony pointed out with the mk-u47 costing more due to it being nearest to original, body , flea head basket, transformers etc..
There are different price points but they are not the same mike .

I have an addiction to it in fact. Just pointing out that Herbie makes a great demo for nearly any product.

I recorded a song last year and the recording just blew because we were messing around with cheap shitty gear. The performance was great and it sounds like shit! I wish we were using good gear. My new rule, if you are going to record use good gear, dammit!!! Ok, back to the MK-U47 - Blueline VS. Shannon Rhodes k47 topic.
