Thanks for finding the link and posting it. can someone who is way smarter than me, tell me... someone streams one of my songs... how much do I get? Is it a percentage of an ever changing pie? If someone downloads my song to listen later, when not connected to a network, and listens to it ten times, do I get paid for 10 spins? Why would anyone ever buy my song again, assuming they would have bought it in the first place? cheers Wiz

www.businessinsider.com.au/apple-is-going-to-start-paying-artists-per-stream-after-launch-2015-6I think I found the answer. Apple has a subscriber base on a monthly basis. All that money from subscription goes into a big bowl. 70 or 73% of that (I don't really know which figure is right) comes out of the bowl to go to artists. All the spins get divided up between those who got played that month. The money is then divided up down the chain, label, writer etc That doesn't matter to me cause I am the label writer etc. It remains to see how it shakes out, in terms of what I actually end up with, which I bet is 4/5ths of F*^K all compared to 3/5 the which I get now 8). Damn. I can't see how any level of the recording industry can survive anymore. I will still make a living from playing live. I can't afford to pay musicians and mastering engineers and duplication houses anymore. I used to be able to do that. I could make a record, pay some guys to play on it... Pay a mastering engineer, pay a duplication house and make a little for myself, not much but enough to keep everyone else going and buy a nice couple of microphone and guitars at the end of the project. Not anymore. I think my last CD will be just that, the last. I can't even see anyway of just going online and even recoup the cost of mastering alone. Someone turn the lights out as you leave.... 8( cheers Wiz

Spotify has 20 million premium subscribers. they pay $9.99/month. so....
20,000,000 * $10/month = $200,000,000/month income for spotify. 200,000,000 - 70% (or 140,000,000) = 60,000,000 / month going into Spotify's pockets before expenses.
smh figures like that sure make pursuing music seem kinda like a stupid field to devote oneself to.

You are better served with Band Camp. bandcamp.com/The streaming is good for the big labels. They have partner contracts with Apple, Spotify and they push new artists there. They get better rates too. With paid streams they will make more money than with the good old CD. But wait there is another problem. The way how people consume music has changed, they jump through mixed play lists. They are not bound to an artist, or to a stile, or to a decade anymore. Chances that you will get millions of streams, as an independent artist, are near to zero. I would still sell CDs on gigs telling the people they cant find you on the Internet because it has no value for you. Watch out for alternative concepts such as band camp. Try to push your music into film maker companies? In my opinion independent songwriters need to rethink their business model. If you are on the big streaming platforms there do not even is a competition, they eat you alive. Its not a solution to give up. The solution is to write a business-plan that gives you the most value. The solution is to not give your energy away to those big stock driven companies. Before I get banned, because I start to think about politics, I say: Love and Peace - hold on.

For real...Why go to all the trouble of creating shit when you can just take it from them and make money off of their work? I think Spotalie has only 10 million paying customers, though. And - they pay less than 70% to creators. BTW - don't forget the ad revenue they make from the ads on their free level.

is anyone liking this Apple Music and use it every day? I actually love it. My only complaint so far is that the Beatles aren't there. Oh - and the artist connect thing is confusing, but I would probably never use that anyway. I listen to TONS more music than I have in the last decade. The ability to think of any song that suits your mood and be able to bring it up is inspiring. I also inevitably end up digging deeper too.

John, study the article that Jerome posted, it explains how streaming works, with graphs. BTW, I find the Apple music part of the iTunes app kinda confusing, especially when you're in a moving vehicle (and you're driving said vehicle.) I'll probably keep subscribing to both Apple and Spotify (so artists get paid a bit,) initially even though it's likely redundant.
