Out of curiosity I just ordered the smaller OV560. Wanted the flexibility of 16V on this one, otherwise I would have gone for the PMV70. Anyway, I'll report on this thread when it's built and tested. Same xformers as the PMV70, so I guess they're similar except for the extra gain.

Interested in these since they use the neumann doa and I don't have a reference point for the sound. But, I don't need pres, I don't need pres!

Don't get the Jansamp. I have a pair sitting for 4 years with problems I, and many others, can't fix. They can't take hot input signals, Loud pops and squeals, osalation. No, NO, No.

If you talking the MA1, Yes. I've got 4 of them. 2 with D.I., 2 with CAPI Attenuated output They've got that 70's transistor sound. Different from my other pres in a good way.

Those transformers are beasts!

Swedish post messed up a bit so the package was delayed a week and by then I was swamped and will be for a few weeks more, so not sure when I'll get to it. But the kit looks great, the faceplate beautiful and the NOS xformers are beasts indeed. Quite heavy chunks of metal :-) I promise to report back.

I don't think it was a kit. i think it was a personal project that he did, which he made available to the public to build if they chose to. Pretty sure it was someone else who made the boards, etc. DIY is not plug and play. Kits don't automatically mean a working project either... This is pretty much why i left the DIY community. It became about buying/selling kits and parts instead of learning and figuring things out. Too many folks attempting things way over their heads and then getting all upset when they can't talk someone else into fixing things. To this day I still get PMs and emails from folks on GDIY begging me to fix stuff for them and I haven't visited the site for years.

unit7, did you ever get around to building that OV560? Sorry it's taking so long! I'm still buried with other stuff, but actually started yesterday. Only had enough time to solder the small stuff and so far the kit looks superb. Up there with all the good ones like CAPI, TB Audio, Hairball etc. I just love the face plate!

I should sleep but I just had to solder the final bits, assemble and test the OV560. Works like a charm. First impression: VERY impressed. Has weight and headroom. Will have to do a proper A/B with my other pre's here, but not sure when I'll have the time.
The only thing that is a bit tricky is to attach the lampholders, otherwise the build is totally straight forward and all parts fit perfectly. Highly recommended!
Bedtime!

Really wish this was 500 compatible..... I don't own a 51x rack, but that style of pre is what I would love to have several of. I'll be interested to hear what you think Paul, maybe some samples too?

The 560 that I just made is 500 compatible. And sure I could post samples, but it could be a while I'm afraid..

Btw, i recently had a glimpse into a 19" case for 2x 51x modules, with psu, i/o XLRs etc... Don't know if it's already official, but Volker (silent:arts) and Frank (frontpanels.de) worked on this, and i think Frank might make this available in nearer future... Might be a good alternative for those who already have a 500 rack and want to try some 51x modules that need the extensions of this standard.

There's something very nice about this pre (still talking about the 560) so I got curious about the PMV70. Got a small royalty payment today so I read it as a sign that I should go ahead and place an order :-) Don't know when, but I'll be back with a report and perhaps some files

I really don't need any more pre's..... this is what I had to tell myself for long enough to buy new converters. Now onto a new computer, then back to comps and eqs and pres.

Finally had a few hours to do the PMV70 kit which have been laying here for a couple of weeks. Again, this build is stellar. Everything fits perfectly. I've only talked into it, using an AT4050, also to check that 48V is working. I believe I sensed a minor difference between the 560 and the PMV70, with the PMV70 perhaps sounding a tad bit more balanced and fuller. Again, I'm buried in work but I'll do a proper test later. But it's very clear that these are really good. Fat sound, low noise and I get the feeling the headroom is really good, so typical everyday, versatile workhorses ready for all sorts of action.

unit7, well it's good to be working. I went ahead and ordered the last two PMV70X's that Volker had in stock. Can't wait to test them out.

Used them as bass DI today. Man they sound good! Don't know if it's the fet plugin or the amp itself but it may be my favorite DI bass tone that I have personally heard. A good bit ahead of the Bo Hanson DI's.
