So did mine but in the end I had to get the capsule reskinned because you cannot totally control how clients interact with the mic. It would completely shut down for 10 seconds or so if you breathed directly on the capsule especially in cooler temperatures. Other times the level would drop a little accompanied by some noise. Even a pop filter wasn’t enough to completely prevent it with some clients. Did Gunter reskin it? Cheers Wiz No it was actually Ben from Beesneez a few years ago. It’s a K67 capsule the same as used in the U67 and early U87’s. Gunter did the other work including replacing the deteriorating plastic base the mic head plugs into as it was breaking down and full of cracks which no doubt also added some noise due to the the very high impedances present. The mic (a U77 Neumann) now sounds amazing and is definitely amongst my desert island keepers.

They are just damn sexy and sometimes, a mic has to look as sexy as it sounds! I gotta admit, I wanna get the Neumann iC4 swivel for my 87 for that reason, I think it looks cool. (ie; old vintage-y session pics w neumanns) Thing is, I'm thus far too cheap to spring for the asking prices for them. I think "if" they're attached to a big ass stand (like the old Atlas) to aid in decoupling, a shock mount proper is less a concern. At least that's what I tell myself. Really dig the Triad quick change coupler thingy, which pretty much eliminates wear to the threads.

If find that a big Atlas stand with a Latch Lake boom is a great isolator for the IC4 swivels on 87s and 67s. My studio floor is covered in, oddly, dense rubber horse stall mats (like you’d find in a Crossfit gym) and that does a pretty good job of decoupling the beefy stands from the ground. It also sounds way better than bare concrete. That swivel mount look is tops in my book! But man they are pricey...

Excellent (or better) vintage U87i, or U87ai Klaus modded? ) I do wonder sometimes... Chris

The Klaus 87 is a more full range mic and gives 67s a run for their money. That said, a vintage 87 is a sound...and a very successful one.

Not to topic drift TOO MUCH....but here’s a one-mic capture of my artist-friend Grace Caston singing a cover of “Jolene” for her Kickstarter video a few months back. The micing setup is a single Klaus modified U87Ai.

Now THAT sounds really good! This is a great example of what a superior mic can do. To me, it's the low level detail on a great mic like this one that budget mics haven't quite gotten right yet. I haven't tried many mics I've heard are good, but the Blackspade mics, Soyuz mics and Chandler all do it. I'm hoping the Stam SA67 will too, once the Tim Campbell capsule is installed.
Anyone know exactly what Klaus did to this 87Ai?

Sorry man, I disagree. "Sound good", definitely, sound great, well.. no. My wife's a great singer too, and we've tried a number of high end mics, but one suited her best. Interestingly, it wasn't either of the two vintage U47's, Soyuz 0-17, 0-19 or the Chandler Redd among others we tried.
That mic is a great match for Grace Caston. That said, I agree she'd sound really good on almost anything, but certain nuances that many of my favorite recordings have can only be achieved with a great mic, and that mic is a seriously good one.
Here's a couple of examples of a great mic Neumann sound, nothing else sounds like this:

It was the Blackspade UM-17B. It was somewhere between a U47 and M49 in tone, closer to the M49.

They're handmade in Switzerland. For a while, Oliver Archut was partnered with Blackspade and built them here in the states. He built mine, but then I sent it to Switzerland and they put in the Thiersch M7 capsule and tweaked it for me.
Funny, I had learned that Nora Jones' first album was done with an M49, so I listened to it on a high end stereo system, and my brain went, oh, that's the sound of my Blackspade. Of course in the same room there would be differences, but they really did nail it.
I believe the newer ones are a little closer to the U47 now.

I'd appreciate it if you would get back to me so we can complete our transaction.
Sorry to intrude upon this thread, but it would seem that you're not getting my messages.
Best Regards - Rich
