I have the tlm-1 which from what I've read is the first version of this it required a proprietary rack and has tube power supply it came from electric ladyland studio it's not the most versatile comp but you can smash the hell out of somthing and hardly any artifacts . I mainly use it on vocals with knobs almost all the way up and is just killer set like this. I've had some good results with bass guitar also but reduction backed off but vocals where it shines just turn up and forget jmo

People seem to love them crushing vox or tickling other sources. Any chance that you have a Sta to compare to?

Maybe the best way to compare tlm- 1 to the sta level is it kinda the sta without the color You can slam.both but the sta imparts it color ( isn't that why we buy a sta? ) I get more milage out of the retro. I don't notice much of any color fron the vac rac but at the same time it's not crystal clean kinda lame comparison I know but I think quite the right way to look at them

They can both be slammed and keep a track upfront in a mix, and hold it in place in a mix, but STA is warmer, gooey-er, and thicker sounding while staying smooth and round. The Vac Rac retains edge and any existing brightness when pushed, so it doesn't get lost or muddy in a dense pop mix. It almost gets a bit edgier or more "attitude-ey" as you push it. Please forgive my self created terms. But it is not a "bright" comp per say.... Still smooth but has clarity and it's vibe adds energy while retaining a more neutral sonic imprint than the STA, although it is not what I would consider transparent or super neutral. It stills adds a bit of color. But not nearly as much as the STA. the Vac Rac does not have adjustable settings - just gain reduction and output gain. They are somewhat similar only in the way they hold a track in place compression-wise - but overall they are different beasts. Don't know if my rambling makes sense, but those are some thoughts. The more I use them the more I see the uniqueness of them each.

Also, I should note that I bought the STA thinking I'd sell my TSL3... Not the case at all. They are both totally awesome and have won out over each other in different mixes. I'd have a hard time parting with either.
