As usual, an interesting perspective song from Henley. I wonder if country radio will play it? I mean, after the listeners Kick Up The Dust with Sangria, followed by a Home Party with a lay that's Like A Wrecking Wrecking Ball, who's gonna wanna listen to an old guy singing about leaving his wife? I kid.....

Without having a lightning bolt strike me, it's not my favorite I've ever heard...but that's just on first listen. But man, I love his voice.

I kid..... Henley has been a model and standard of quality writing for me since forever, especially lyrically. This song has typical Henley craft, reminds me of "Heart Of The Matter" with a weaker chorus. I predict this song will not be a hit. It's a downer for his graying audience [me being one of.] Have no idea if it's autobiographical, but from his delivery, it sorta sounds like it. Why else write and record it? 'Cause it's commercial? Listen to the last seconds of the ending, the whole track glide pitches up on the sustain out, a nice effect in the digital age.

I'm sorry, Heart of the matter doesn't have a "not strong chorus". THIS on the other hand has nothing but a single line.
This is a different beast all together....and you should probably listen to Martina's duet, too. They released both to YouTube the other day...this sounds like an utterly crass play for record sales to he audience of modern country. Just like Sheryl Crows last, and ores I likely don't care enough to listen.
It should be titled "Crass Pandering County".
I'm going to buy it, because He's a hero of mine....and since those two have Michelle and Martina...i think Trisha sang something wi him--talk about Henley here when Nashville was GREAT.....anyhow...I don't have much expectations based on those singles. Unless those are the most exceptionationally generic tunes on the album....I mean, his and Stan's stuff from Long Road was as strong as anything he's done. He's still capable. I question the motivation here.
And I hope that release finds me eating crow and saying I'm wrong. Nothing would make me happier than a new full henley record. But, the Capital emblem says this isn't likely it....

Jamie, "Heart of the Matter" has a great chorus, never said otherwise. "Take a Picture of This," not so much, as chorus, or tag line to build his story of the lyric around, a similar device he used in "Heart". I still like Henley. Can't deny his catalog, and wouldn't.

Whole thing is streaming on NPR currently....may be down tomorrow for official release, though.
I have mixed feelings. Don could sing the phone book and I'd love it....but, with this one, he kinda IS. I mean, Bramble Rose aside....the songwriting on this is....I mean the lyrics are pedestrian and say very little....the music is predictable NashVegas style big pretty, dynamically flatlined country pop which really is a modern take on the mid 70s soCal scene anyway....

I hope he's got something better than that up his sleeve. That isn't a high point to go out on. Not when you consider 'Boys of Summer' 'Dirty Laundry' 'Life in the Fastlane' 'Last Worthless Evening' etc
