So one thing reading these forums has caused is a slow insidious leak in my wallet. It started with a coupon code. I picked up the Waves Bass Rider for $29. Then I found myself on their mailing list watching the daily/weekly/monthly sales. Loved the BR, so I picked up the Vocal Rider a few weeks ago when it came up at the not so fantastic sale price of $79, but then the other day I scarfed the Linear Phase Multiband Comp on a 'one day only' ..for $29!
So I have a few questions.. One is, what's your favorite Waves plug? ..i.e., what do you think I should I be on the lookout for? And then, are there any other brands/sites I should be keeping an eye on that offer similar deals?

Put your wallet away, save your cash until black friday, then go nuts What? Wait for Thanksgiving? You know I don't have that kind of patience. My only saving grace is that my wife is spending all of our money on a kitchen remodel, so we're in recovery mode. There's only room to slip in the little purchases here and there. Slow and steady wins the race, right?

Joing the mailing lists at Audiodeluxe.com and jrrshop.com if you haven't already.
On most mixes I use: Slate VBC. Waves CLA compressors, Rbass. FabFilter Pro-C/Q/L. Kush Clariphonic. Valhalla Vintage Verb. Plugin-Alliance, SPL Transient Designer, MAAG EQ4, Vertigo VSC-2. Softube Summit Grand Channel. PSP NobleQ. IK British, API EQ's.
I have a bunch of others that get tossed in here and there, but these are my most used.

Also, use your education discount where you can. FabFilter and PSP for sure. Can't remember who else gives them, but worth looking into.

On a budget...built in plugs can do the job! Absolutely, that's why I've be picking up ones that offer unique functionality - or at least do something that Logic doesn't. I'm holding off on botiquey single channel compressors - pres - EQ's. I'm pretty happy with what comes stock in Logic; the comp plug has 6 or 7 different emulations. Maybe, just maybe, I'd consider an EQ alternative that brings more musicality to the table, but that's probably more in the 'grass is greener' category of fallacious reasoning at this point. Really, what I'm saving up for is an OTB single channel pre/strip (can't say why but for all the crit it takes, I'm still enamored by the LA-610 MkII strip) - and still looking to find that magical glass slipper mic for my voice. Those are the kinds of purchases that I'll be sore tempted to jump on on Black Friday - or be looking for used.

Yeah, I've applied for and received the FF discount status, but sometimes it seems they run specials that are better then the Edu discounts so I keep holding off. The trend is that these things are getting cheaper and cheaper, right?

On a budget...built in plugs can do the job! Very late I learned that some of the logic compressors just do the compression job better vs. some of the esoteric priced plug ins. I think the code for basic compression is no secret to any developer.

I tried the Logic compressors and couldn't get nearly the same saturation and bloom compared to the UAD 1176's.

I always seem to wait for sales. Big ones happen around Thanksgiving/Christmas but also some in July/midsummer.

Logic's compressors shine on the 2 bus. I have, or have tried most of the compressors in existence, and the Logic compressors are the best. I'm including Slate, A.O.M. UAD, every Waves compressor, and a few more. For guitars, the CLA76 is my go to. I have UAD's 1176's, LA-2A's, the Fatso, and all the other Waves compressors, but for some reason, the CLA just works. The guitar presets are magic. Reverb, I use Relab's 480XL and UAD's EMT-140, but on the cheap, get Valhalla Verb, it's got most everything you'll ever need. Logic'd reverbs are fine too. I once did a test with a student and produced an entire track with Logic's own plugs, and I swear, the reverb sounded like a Coldplay record. Phree Phuzz is superb for making in the box electric's a little more real sounding. Blue Cat Audio's freebies work beautifully too. Here ya go M57: www.dontcrack.com/freeware/software.php/id/7037/audio/Plug-ins-%26amp-effects/Have fun! * just make sure you get a decent preamp, it doesn't matter which plug you use, the pre affects everything.
