Ok, so my pal is a fisherman, but not like u think, this is how he rolls... Wakes up at 3:00am, by himself, he gets the little 16'/small outboard motor boat into the harbor, heads out 10 miles into the pacific ocean, gets his wet suit on, fins, scuba mask and snorkel, gets his tethered rubberbanded custom made spear rifle and jumps in, takes a deep breath, swims down 30'!! Stalks fish weighing up to 100lbs, shoots the spear through them, pulls them in, bear hugs and rips their gills out to bleed them out under water, then unsheaths the knife and stabs them in the head, and surfaces with his fish..... Yes holding his BREATH the whole time! Sounds like BS right? Well it's not except for two parts, the 100lbs part, and on Thursday he went out with a pal, and the fish he caught was 175lbs!!!!! He missed the Cali state record for the biggest tuna ever caught by spearing, by less than 8 lbs! Dude is 6'5" tall, check this out.... Attachment Deleted

Brass balls and tuna steaks for a year. he filleted it up yesterday and estimates 100lbs clean meat haha, going over tomorrow probably for the cue 8) One other thing i should mention.. when he catches these fish, he carves them up, eats or gives to family and friends every last piece of meat. He puts the carcasses in his giant cooler and pulls them about a 1/2 block down to the beach in Encinitas, and (what he calls) gives the remains back to the sea. Dude is a trip, and a very cool guy! Oh, and he can hold his breath for about 5 minutes! that's 4:30 longer than i can haha

I'm a fan of Maguro sushi, especially fresh. But wow, sounds like it takes a while for these fish to die!
Better he does it to fish than humans, I guess. Scary dude!

Oh, and he can hold his breath for about 5 minutes! that's 4:30 longer than i can haha A fish like that is worth a crazy amount of money to Japanese fish buyers. I was just in coastal Maine for a couple of weeks and I heard of a 16 year old kid who got $70k for a fish just like that. He might want to rethink what he does with the fish he catches. Personally, tuna is one of those fish I just won't eat anymore - they're a magnet for toxins like mercury and PCBs and whatever the stuff still leaking out of the Fukashima Daiichi reactor might be. They range for thousands of miles so there just no telling what they might pick up. Pretty much anything out of the Gulf of Mexico or the Pacific northwest is off my plate for good.

Gutting the fish in the water is pretty dangerous stuff. Does he have issues with sharks.

Gutting the fish in the water is pretty dangerous stuff. Does he have issues with sharks. A friend with a sport fishing boat sells the guts of large Tuna to the Japanese for about $3,000. The whole fish goes for a lot more! They hang around the canyons in barges about 100 miles SSE of Long Island, just waiting for boats with good catches.

They contemplated going after it! But he was pretty psyched about the fish he got already, and blew it off. The guy is as mild mannered as they come, but he is seriously nuts! Haha
