I check if there are new drivers for my RMEs all few weeks. There was one, one month old.
I did it it after this update we, me and friend, could hear on top of the lead vocal a distortion that was not there before.
So what is this? How is this possible?
Is it getting old, or is the unit going to die? Or was one of the drivers faulty, or is the new one faulty.... Scary.
Thnaks .... Cheers

Downgrade to an older driver. Take another sample. Compare both.. Now you know!

True logical....
EDIT:
Did it, was the same issue. Just to be save I did overwrite the firmware.
And everything was fine after this overwrite process. Can such a unit lose data???
Thats crazy.

WTF and than it came back...
Half the day burned for nothing because the logic session went for some reason defective. Had to use one version off the back up plate.
But the funny thing is the solution is always the last idea you have in mind.

Another example why I don't waste time with a computer in the studio. I don't have time for that stuff, I turn it all on, press record and it's done. I don't know where the patience comes from dealing with that stuff. My PC would be out in the desert filled with .223 rifle rounds before I would deal with that crap.

Rebooting is not always the solution... Guys, computer stuff is a hard way to do to pay your bills. Did this for many years. So don't diss the IT guys, please. Oh, well, and often, the problem sits in front of the computer. Actually - most of the time. But o.k., if we want to make fun of it - this one is funny as hell, less repetitive, and sums it all up nicely:

The RME is software calibrated between +4 and -10, no? Mine is....per IO....I would assume any firmware update will reset a lot of things to default--or certainly COULD.....
Also, Totalmix controls finer leveling, too....which again--reset to defaults might've been something you ironed out years ago that you don't even remember setting. Mine recently got reset with my fooling with some various external summing things....and I'm running into all kinds of things that I go "oh yeah....how did I have that set again?"
What I don't think any issue is....is in the actual sound quality. This is no doubt a driver resetting some level to too hot (or simply hotter than you had it, thus you're hearing distortion.
I've actually longed for RME, or someone to make a "mode" where the DSP mixer simply is deactivated all together....and it's just software out to hardware out....no gain stage and panning and potential rerouting and such....I actually helped a friend troubleshoot his new UFX--same deal--he'd forgotten he'd gone in and set up some stuff to try some crazy routing for another project....opened up a normal template project and nothing "worked".
So....routing/digital gain staging/converter software calibration.

A smart German, named Carl Benz, invented the car in 1886. And with this humans stopped using horse and cart more and more.
