I haven't upgraded yet...but...
Although no official announcement thus far from Avid, Pro Tools 12.1 should be shipping today and with some surprise new features.
They include for owners of Pro Tools 12 native:
128 audio tracks 512 instrument tracks Input monitoring Copy to send feature for fast set-up of headphone mixes Native support for HEAT when used with HD licence Solo tracks in PFL or AFL Some of these things were unexpected and it may be Avid's way of calming down the dissent amongst those who put out for Pro Tools 12 (some months ago in many cases) but have not seen the promised track freeze and cloud collaboration features.
Only time will tell, but to see input monitoring in native Pro Tools at last will see some heave a sigh of relief - enough to get them to upgrade to Pro Tools, who knows?
Registered Pro Tools 12 users should see the download in their Avid account.

Features seem nice. But I could care less about those actually. I hope they've ironed out the BUGS. I'm tired of sending crash reports to Avid. Sent about 4 or 5 today.....

Ugh. Think I'll still wait. Check in on the DUC and see how things shake out. I'm waiting, my PT tech is waiting....

I just wish they would increase the physical I/O count. 32 just isn't enough, but to go to HD is unrealistic for me, I have no need for it other than having a few extra I/O. If they'd go to like 48 that would really help some of use that use 32 I/O for consoles/mixers and the ability to have a few other I/O for aggregate device purposes. I can't upgrade from 11 until they do that. I paid full cost for my PT, I'd be willing to get into the subscription thing if they would just expand that I/O.

Don't think that will happen Jerome. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. They are going to protect their high end sales by putting limits on the lower priced systems. It's the way it always has been, and probably always will be. Actually, I'm a little surprised with some of the native 12.1 features they just let out. If they WANTED to, the systems could be a wide open as anyone's particular computer could handle, but......

Well, you know it's a damn shame they are withholding that. I mean other DAWs don't. They are missing here. I mean the folks that use HD are always going to use HD, we are talking about another 16 outputs, for most major studios using HD it still wouldn't allow them into the Native system, but would allow folks like me to utilize Native to my full potential. Right now I'm having to sacrifice a few outputs because of the 32 limit..... it's just crazy they limit it to 32, it doesn't allow the outputting to things like other reference monitoring and such. Maybe in the future they will expand it for us Native users, until then I'll just work with what I've got.

But then they'd be competing with the other DAWs instead of having an unspoken aura of superiority by having expensive upgrades to one of the single most boring pieces of equipment an engineer owns. Their business practices have always been shitty, I've always been waiting for PT users to flip the table and tell Avid to get fucked with the newest upgrade for years. How long did people have to work without Offline Render in the 21st century when even Windows Movie Maker or Cool Edit Pro could manage it? What about the obscene blocking of Software Dev. with licensing fees for building their plugins? Or the fact that you could only buy hardware that was approved for the software. Just my 2 cents, there's few audio companies I'd see burn but...

Well....in my mind they EARNED the title of superior, but of course that's open to argument. But in my world, there's little doubt that it's superior, and the most necessary piece of gear I own. I honestly TRIED to switch this last upgrade, but alas, PT is the answer for me. As for it being the most boring piece of gear out there, well, maybe - but it's also the most necessary. I can get by without a U47 or a 1073 or a LA2A, but I can't get by without Pro Tools. Just saying'.....

I think the earned the title of "Firsties", but superior is highly subjective. They don't do anything special - there's no 11 Herbs and Spices to the way PT's works. For a long while they were ahead of the game, but the last 6 years has seen that flip around completely and they're finally acknowledging they will have to compete, feature-wise. They might *gasp* have to build the cost of the mp3 conversion codec into the DAW, or include features similar to other DAWs, or go native...!
Fair enough if you can't change off of PT - honestly, I liked it alot as an editor when I used to use it. Great tool for editing and mixing. Didn't really like it for recording stuff and I hated the MIDI editor (This was PT 7-9?) I found it too bulky and slow - which is why I'm running a fairly lean install of Reaper. I need the speed, and quick access to new tracks (without having to go pre-designating Mono/Stereo/Aux/Master/MIDI ..ugh!) and having tools like Varispeed and Tap Tempo visibly on hand is extremely useful.
Of course it's important in an absolute sense: we can't get by without doors or windows or clean electricity either. My point is what was the pedestal of technology in 1994 is now absolute mundanity. It's gone from the days of being the top of a studios inventory to down with the coffee maker. And in that world I can't believe you'd charge someone more for a higher track count without drawing little Hitler moustaches on yourself every morning.

The subtleties of PT are what makes it king in my world. Mixing and editing are awesome, and nothing else touches it IMO. For hosting VSTi's, and for what you get with it out of the box, yeah it sucks. But the "right stuff" is there, and it's simple, and it works, and it's solid. So.....I'm sticking with it. For now.
