Henry's console does NOT have the original trannys! I believe Dave swapped them with something new. But it is a thing of beauty none the less. Dan's console is now for sale, and was one of the three featured in last months mix magazine. I think you can buy it for a cool $250K. Such a deal! Dave did swap them, getting rid of the weird little Beyers. nobtwiddler, One of the things that I really thought was well done was the ergonomics of the desk. That is... the pitch or slight angle of the faders , and having the modules in front of your face like that was so great. Do you still have your portable rig, I remember it looked like you got pretty close on the ergonomics?

nobtwiddler - arny will put the lustraphone tranny's in for a charge, right? Although I've heard there have been mixed opinions.

Hmmm... how many 1/2 cent downloads would it take to pay for that? For some, passion and desire is stronger than the cost. That could become one very expensive hobby. Some rich lawyer will buy it, they buy airplanes too.

Hey Guys.. OK, the original trannys in Henrys console were in fact the little "Beyers", and in the extensive 2 day listening session we did at my place over a few days, they were found to be the most undesirable of all the Helios modules!
So, as I stated previously, Henry's console does not have these installed (for good reason) But I guess for the purest, it's not an original Helios? Dave did some extensive mods to this particular console and it is fact, an amazing console! ALL FOR THE BETTER !
As for the ergonomic of Henry's console, it's one of the best, most logical, I've ever seen! I love it..............! Sadly no recent console manufacturers are going back to this basic design, as I think it's one of the best ever~!
Anyhow, I now own more then 40 modules of the reissue Helios type 69's. And during the last few years I have replaced some of the mic pre trannys with 4 different versions, each time trying to get closer to the original "Lustraphone" tranny that I heard a few years ago during the extensive Helios test we did at my place.
After all is said and done, the new reissue Helios tranny is very, very, close to the original, and for me and my "clientele" we are totally blown away by the sound of these modules and couldn't be happier! Then again, everyone is different, so to each his own...
The Helios modules (consoles) have their own thing sonically. And if this is something you are into, then nothing else will do! It's as simple as that........!

It's as simple as that........! Paul, I'll have to double check, though as I remember and could tell, the only substantial mods to that console were the Transformers, the addition of Dave's brilliant scope and phase system, and the little AM speaker. I have had the modules in my hands and they definitely were original save for the upgraded transformer; I have some detailed pics here somewhere and will post when I find them. Side note, the biggest thing in keeping up that console were keeping the little monitor faders clean, and the master section (quite a point to point adventure wiring wise). As far as 'for the purest' ?... for me at least, the combination of the components and layout make the circuit. If it were all about a single component like the transformer, then by that logic, you could strap that specific part to any circuit and it would generically sound the same; would it be a helios, no. Does that mean the Transformer doesn't play large part sonically, no. The HELIOS console, approach, and what it yields as a whole is what's so special to me. Not to get into the whole Arny vs Dave modules debate again; I've definitely drooled over your portable setup, and both gentleman have spent great effort and expense building their businesses. FWIW, I did directly A/B Dave's Realios to Henry's console, and the sound was spot on; in fact I now own 5 of them. Dave's release of the Realios A9052 EQ as I heard it a couple NAMM's back caused instant flashbacks and desire. Anyways, if we want to go down the modern Helios vs Realios road again, let's start a new thread.

No one is arguing...this ain't GS I've thought about trying out those Realios. Does he still make them? Any pics of the guts?

Yep I asked a legitimate question because I was interested and honestly with all the talk of Dave and Arnie couldn't remember what Paul had ! Plus I really didn't feel like going through the old GS threads ! This is JKs party and honestly If you think a Helios thread isn't going to go there your nuts!

I wasn't "scolding" anyone...you can ask whatever you want. I'd be interested in hearing the Realios too.

Hey gang, I have no problem with Dave's stuff, I consider him a friend, and I love everything he has his hands in. Anything Dave creates is fabulous.
And I'm in the camp of whatever sounds better (to the end user) is fine. Even if that means some custom mods along the way. Why not! Make it as good as it can be.
As you know,I'm a fan of anything Helios, That being said Henry's console with the Beyers installed (or any Helios with Beyers) isn't a real contender for me in the vintage console game. So what Dave did to that console had to be done in my opinion. And it is a wonder to sit at... Really a beautiful thing....And from what I heard it sounds as good, if not better then it looks. I'm jealous!) Haha
Long story short, I too have done mod after mod on my modules. I experimented with at least 3 different transformers, as well as some new tweaks and mods from Tony himself to bring up the headroom, and make the outputs up to +4 instead of 0 Db.
In a nutshell, the quest never ends...
Until you finally one day say I had enough of this shit, and just realize that most of this doesn't matter one bit, and all you wanna do is make music. I'm at that place now!

I'm at that place now! Hi Paul, true most of this doesn't matter. On thing though, the Beyers came installed in the console from the Helios factory; I believe, not the only one either. Considering in retrospect that Lustraphones are the 'gold standard', I'm not sure why Helios would have switched; the Beyers were horrible little things. What I'm really more interested in is your Helios rig! Can you post a pic of how the covers lock up on those racks? You've basically made a portable helios console and captured the ergonomics too.
