Hey guys, I have a pair of Jens' limited run of his Eisen eac312v preamps and they totally rock. I've heard many say they sound virtually indistinguishable from the vintage API's. Has anyone tried these alongside the CAPI vp28's? I see so much love for the VP28 and wonder if it's worth adding them to my rig or if it would be redundant. Thoughts?
P.S. I've got tons of pres... So I'm not needing many more, i'm just wondering if the VP28's would be a vast improvement.

I use mine on the 2 buss and while tracking, so I don't think of the vp28 as just a preamp.

Yeah - it's not a 312 circuit.

I've used both.
Wasn't a huge fan of the 312 and prefered daking everytime because it had a little more bottom end.
The vp28 to me killed the 312 as well. More bottom, smoother etc.

The VP28 is also a true 2-stage preamp with 2 opamps and 2 output transformers. The fader gives lots more gain/tonal options. I think the VP28 was the first 2-stage 2520 style pre on the market. The Heider is also 2-stage.

Yes your gear is stunning good.
That 2 stage thing was for me a game changing moment.

Thanks so much for the info. I'm generally up to date on the latest in gear but been so busy in the studio I haven't had enough time to keep in the loop the last couple years. The last I researched everyone was raving about the Vp25 & 26... So I totally missed these and they seem to be the most loved of the bunch!! Looking forward to trying them

These are my fav pre's of all time at any price, they are the most unique and versatile pres ever designed IMO, heres what you get, 5 sources of tone, 1 input tranny, 2 output trannys, 2 discrete operational amps, now include great filters with excellent target freq options. The beauty here is that this is an ACTUAL pre amp and a console channel fader in one unit, by attenuating the pre input, and opening up the channel fader output you can get very wide open and natural sounds. By opening up the pre input, and attenuating the channel fader you can drive some very nice harmonic mojo and some perfect light touch compression, and then their is everything in between, just fantastic! Now if thats not enough, you can very easily push in some different op amps in the input and output amp positions, i find the Red dot 2520's in both positions= a 1970 record, then a 2520 in the input position driven pretty good, with a 1731 on the output position= ephonic smoothness that's butter all the way, and pretty much my favorite, i have that combo in all my Vp28's and Lc53a eq's.
Hope that helps, long live CAPI!!

Don't forget to mix through it in line mode as well. Even at unity gain it makes everything sound much better. Much much better.

Yes your gear is stunning good. That 2 stage thing was for me a game changing moment. Same here. The very first test of the VP28 after I finished putting it together was a very memorable moment. It seems like sometimes it really only takes about 1 second of signal going through something and you know right away that it's a really special piece of equipment; the VP28 is one that really sticks out in my mind. The whole is way beyond the sum of the parts.

Do you guys find the different op amp combos to be subtle or quite noticeable? I see the red dots getting a ton of love and also the combo with 2520 on input and the 1731 on output.

Is that the Gar-2520 or the Red Dot 2520?

On the other hand, you can get a consistent console like sonic footprint by using the same combos on every track, I think both have their place, so.... i'd say try both, the cost of an additional op amp is negligible 8)

Is that the Gar-2520 or the Red Dot 2520? The gar version. I got that combo because a few people were enjoying it. It sounded so good I never bothered to change that but haven't heard other combos
