John, you listen to a lot of soled tracks. Is that midrange issue prevalent in a full mix? Most of the time, vocals need more mids than you think to stand up next to a barrage of midrange instruments. I talked about that a little earlier in the thread. I never eq a vocal solo'd.

@johnkenn if you're using the free Freq Analyst plugin from BlueCat, just stick it on a stereo bus, route one mic to the left side of that bus, route the other mic to the right side of that bus. Check the boxes at the bottom of the plugin so it shows "peak", and L&R. that'll give you a blue and red line, one for either input to the pluin. ...yeah, tried that way too...same results, because as Cat5 explained, we're really just seeing how the two very high-quality mics reproduced the same voice, so variations are very minor...frankly, I've had similar experiences comparing my best tube mics...on the same voice, variations in the response graphs are rather minor, but differences are more revealing to the ear...often it's just a case of "pick'em"... Again: Mic A (Blue) Mic B (Red) Attachments:

Shannon has that mic absolutely dialed for your voice.

I definitely preferred JK's vocal on the MK47. Seemed to have more content and vibe in the mid and lower mids.

Mentioned this in another thread...think I'm gonna commission Shannon to do a cap for it - K47 - and have him tweak to my liking. Then I might see if he can do some kind've convertible thing for 2 heads. If I love his cap (I have a feeling I will) I might not even bother with the convertible thing though. Selling the CV4 is gonna be a little leap of faith, though...I know I love it...but I think this 47 has a higher ceiling to it...

I wish I lived down there so he could dial mine in for my sax. it's real smooth tho. I should just practice more and work on my sound, tbh lol

Just got here. I preferred mic A, the MK-U47, before I knew which was which, but yes, there's not a huge difference there, but just enough to make me lean to the 47.
If I might say it out loud, I agree with Tony about the Apollo pres. I've been sitting with the Svartbox for a little while, and realized that what's been bugging me for two years, and what I've tried in vain to mix OUT of my tracks wasn't the tone of my mic, wasn't the preamp, wasn't my gain staging or use of plugs, it's simply the Apollo pres pushing mids in a way that just adds an edge I can't stand to my tracks. I'm going to look at the new Apollo when I can swing it, and if the conversion isn't way better, I'll get a satellite and a Symphony, if I can afford it and if they'll work together.

thanx to all i have a somewhat small twitch that is making drop bad words more than normal for me about it all now.
John we did your mic how long ago. there has been at least 3 MAJOR advancement in the process let alone a BUNCH of FUC**** up. WE all know that it a good thing in our world. Now we know what not to do.. Anywho I'm wondering if now we can address the same issue from a different or more improved way to see how it would come out. Just a thought that is driving me crazy and giving me gas and anxiety, a long sleepless night ahead BUT Shit no biggie ……………………………………………….lol

We will see if the dude calls me back on the cv4 tomorrow. Selling that would give me the money to do some more modding with you. If he doesn't call, I'll take it as a sign and keep it though.

So - at the risk of embarrassing myself (why stop now)...and inspired by the cover of "All The Gold In California" from tonight's "True Detective" episode...here is me running through the first rondeau (nice) 5 times with different iterations each time. Tried to level match. It's my best Larry Gatlin impression.
All through the MK-U47 1. Helios No EQ 2. Helios minus a couple db's at 1.4kHz (all takes will have this moving forward) 3. Helios --> CAPI FC526 Fast Attack/Release minus 5-7ish GR 4. Helios --> Sta-Level Double attack medium release minus 10ish GR 5. Helios --> CAPI FC526 --> Sta-Level moderate GR

Didn't notice the pitch, just dug it. the EQ choice is spot on I reckon, and I reckon you should just close your wallet up right now. There aint nothing gonna be better, just different. Killer combination of source, mic pre and comps. cheers Wiz
