Thanks for the welcome Tony, I haven't participated much but visit RGO often for the wealth of information!
The 1512 has a differential input but for a balanced output you need to convert single-ended to differential (i.e. line driver IC or transformer). I have not tired one of the line drive IC's so I can't speak to how it affects the sound. It seems a convenient way to convert to differential, with good CMRR and a buffer for more current capability.

I for one like the THAT 1510 mic pre based on my experience with the SCA T15. I'd like to try some of these. Also had good experience with the SCA T15's..... clean, but not TOO clean. Usually use on overheads.

This is exactly the mic pre I've been looking for ! DIY , 500 series , cheap , Clean ......finally someone delivered . At $150 that is a great deal . Question for you guys that have used a THAT 1510 chip mic preamp , Do they sound good on Vocals ?? I've read that its best to have transformers when tracking vocals ? Lately I'm really liking clean straight-wire w/gain type preamps on vocals. Gives a ton of clarity to the voice, sort of a "weightless" sound effect, which is nice on certain kinds of singing.

i like em too monkey.
a while back I was asking for clean preamps in the sytek camp because I do like the sytek preamps very much. was a little underwhelmed with what was available in diy 500 series until now.
can't wait to try these. not used the that chip based preamps before. have listened to recorded tracks from the five fish pre and liked those so fingers crossed.

I put THAT 1510's in the mic preamps of my D&R Vision console and quite like them. The D&R design follows the 1510 with an op amp for a second stage of gain. So as you turn the gain knob you get gain at the THAT chip and the op amp, in a ganged fashion. I subbed in a LME49720 for all the op amps in the channel. I have to say that if I had to start all over again, I'd be just fine with those console preamps. I quite like them and use them on every session. I once spent a bit of time comparing them to some API clones I had on toms and snare drum. To be honest there wasn't a huge difference at all. The console preamps sounded just as punchy and snappy. I actually did a jazz record a couple years ago to tape where I used the console preamps exclusively with the exception of a pair of True Systems PT2-500's. Brad - I've compared the D&R's to API's many times, and used them interchangeably on sessions, and even interspersed on drum kits. They are fine. And as you well know, completely transformerLESS. :-)
