I'm not sure this is in the right place, but Microsoft has evoked an aggravation campaign to get Windows users to upgrade to Windows 10. Personally, I'm not interested in being a bug reporter for M$ and suffering through driver problems for who knows how long. Microsoft has conveniently left out an option to close the task bar Icon in the right-click menu. If you feel the same about avoiding Windows 10, you may open Task Mangler (Manager) and look for the process: "GWX.exe". Right click and select "End Process". Then look for the process "TrustedInstaller", and right-click to select "End Process" from the Menu. You'll need to do that every day until (?) an opt out procedure is in place or someone investigates how to block the "GWX.exe" process from starting.

Thanks b1
I found the charms in Windows 8 to be incredibly aggravating. Hopefully they'll nix that idea for future releases.

On a somewhat related note, I find the push for Yosemite, Mavericks or whatever else is Apple's latest OS upgrade to be EQUALLY annoying.
I'm still running Snow Leopard on my studio Mac Pro towers and it works just peachy. I have no interest in upgrading it despite Apple's CONSTANT attempts to get me to do so.

I hang onto stuff to the last thread. Still running boxes with XP 32/64, Vista 32/64, Win7 32/64, and still have a couple or 3 Win '98 SE boxes. I've got a lot invested in soft/hardware on all of those platforms. Shucks, I'm still running Cubase VST 5.1 with XP 32 bit on one machine. I find inspiration in different forms through all of the old stuff here. I've ignored Win 8 totally, because it's incompatible with a lot I've got. Unless some remarkable hardware or software comes along, I'll stop the love affair at Win 7, although Cubase 8 Pro is tempting.

It'll be interesting. I just ordered a 6 core Pro Tools PC with two system drives, one to stay at 8.1 and one I'll upgrade to 10. pro-tools-pc.com

It doesn't happen until July. I would image your drive as a backup with Paragon free.

Yeah, the offer was "reserve" a free upgrade. I think I've got the "GWX" process permanently shut down without deleting files. Those seem to be decent prices at pro-tools-pc.com/. I'll keep my eye out for the upcoming dual Xeon version.... well I'll try to have a look see at the parts they use, to incorporate in my own future build. That looks to be a gem for video work.

I've been interested in the Pro Tools PC for a while. I've talked with Neil and crew a bunch of times and they seem really great. I have a feeling that when Win 10 hits and is stable it will be the go to OS for DAWs. I've been using the beta for some time and I have nothing but good things to say about it (the charms are gone!!!) AD

Same as keymod, Cubase 8Pro running on Windows 7 64bit without a problem. If you look at the Cubase 8 specs, it requires Windows 7 or 8.

I've heard how much better Cubase 8 Pro is and understood Win7 is one of the requirements. I may be tempted to go that way at some point, but I'll have to get over being miffed at Yamaberg first. They dropped support for XP and Vista with the UR824 a couple of Firmware revisions ago. I've only today gotten confirmation from them (after a previous failed attempt) that in order to test the DSP Guitar Amp Classics, I'd have to give up XP & Vista, whereas I can't degrade the firmware (why?) if I don't like the modelling. And my wife's UR22 has a problem with some Condenser mics. She uses a Dynamic, but it's the principle of the thing. They won't do a free repair unless we give a Condenser brand and model #, even though the serial # is confirmed to be one of the affected units. I tell you, it's felt too much like a Steinberg circus around here, of late. So they are on "the list", for now.

Neil wrangles PCs and consoles for the BBC as his day job. All of the machines are tested with the mac os for people who want an up to date CPU to use with their Pro Tools pci-e cards. I don't want a mac but I do want the option of buying a used HDX or HD native system.
The Haswell-Es offer twice the floating point calculations per core as Sandy Bridge. I'm getting the lesser 6 core because it's a 3.3GHz that can still handle peaks up to 3.6. It seems to be the sweet spot right now performance-wise. Anything significantly more powerful would be both significantly more expensive and noisy.

If you want to get rid of the Win10 nag screen in Win7-8.1, go into Windows Update, choose "Installed Updates", search for Windows Update KB3035583, right click, deinstall. This is the update that phones home, contains the downloader for Win10 etc... Then search manually for updates after the uninstall, it will be found again for install. Exclude it from future updates. Done.

I just priced out a dual 10 core E5 machine and it comes in at about three grand less than the highest end Mac Pro and doesn't necessitate me having to get a Thunderbolt chassis. I know Neil and crew can have builds like these listed on the Pro-Tools PC site as coming soon. I really think a lot of the naysayers on this thread will really warm up to Win10 when it hits. It really does take the best of Win7 and 8 and throws out the trash. AD

right click, deinstall. SNIP... uninstall, I find "Windows Speak" hilarious. uninstall deinstall... there's a word in English for that: REMOVE. The antonym of install is remove. If M$ has their way, we will soon "insert a cable" and then instead of removing it, we will "deinsert" it or "uninsert" it. And insetad of ejecting a DVD, we will "uninsert" that as well. Reminds me, I need a toaster that can deinsert the bread automatically.

Haha. I don't even know the english version. German version MS speak is even worse. Because it is also inconsistent in many places.... Worked once as a freelance technical translator in this field. MS projects were hilarious. Badly paid for the beginner, because you lose alot of time with their glossaries and lectors, at that time seemingly a bunch of exile germans that haven't been in Germany for decades, because their corrections were a bit like automatic translations from chinese sometimes... :-P We did alot of stuff around Office 2000, back in time...
