Hey Mark - can you tell us what pres you find work really well with this mic? Does it require lots of gain? What is noise like? Tube or solid state?

Hey Mark - can you tell us what pres you find work really well with this mic? Does it require lots of gain? What is noise like? Tube or solid state? Hi John, Speaking of preamps, probably the first thing I have to mention there is a notion that ribbon microphones require a higher input impedance of the pre. While some do, our ribbon microphones were designed to work with standard input impedances of modern pres (which can be anywhere between 1.5kΩ to 3.5KΩ) and in fact, will have the flattest frequency response with those settings. Of course, if you have a variable input impedance switch you could experiment with different settings to try different "flavors". In general, our users just leave it in low impedance settings for the most neutral and unhyped sound. That would be hard to recommend any specific preamplifiers, as that depends a lot on type of music, instrument, taste, personal preferences, and so on... The main thing to keep in mind, if you record mostly loud sources then some 65dB of gain would be sufficient. If you use it for quiet sources then probably 70-75dB should be good. If your very favorite pre has only 60dB then you could try something like Cloudlifter. In the future we have plans to make something similar, so stay tuned... Here on this forum there are some users of our mics, so I would really appreciate if somebody could chime in and share experiences. Best, M

I use a 50dB RCA BA-2A with the MF65 all the time, electric guitar amps see it frequently turned down to 40dB. I have one singer who can overload the converter input using the BA-2A standing 3 feet away from the MF65. FWIW.

I'm mostly using either a Magnecord pt6 tube pre (about 50db) or a ss WSW 811510b (maybe ? 60db) w/ the MF65. They really work well depending on source. If the source is relatively quiet, I tend to use some make up gain via a comp. I did not have much luck when I tried the cloud lifter fwiw. In my case, it introduced some increased noise with the increased signal it provided.
