There are soooo many usable small amps these days ! But a fave has always been the good old Fender Champ and its variations with a pedal or 2 for some sweeting and a different speaker! There are also so many great guitar speakers now remember the speaker choice in most small combos is where they liked to cut back to hit a price point. Always found Amps even tiny ones liked room to open up, closets are great for isolation but they suck tone like a sponge! Also space = bass so if your starving for lowend a bigger room is the best EQ!

To be fair I have to say taht I like some AMP sims for clean guitar. Some of the Logic 9 sims are great for clean guitar.

That a ppc112? How do you like the cab? Jesse - it's a cool rig. Has a V30 in it which I have a love/hate relationship with. Sounds good with clean and classic rock OD tones but driving it further than that and incorporating the speaker breakup isn't really my bag. When it comes to more overdriven tones I prefer more headroom out of a speaker. This is just my preference/experience because there are tons of guitar players getting great heavier tones with V30 speakers. Maybe because it's a single speaker 1x12?

So the conversation made me thinking because I said that the sims sound OK when they are clean.
I had the idea to use my Tubescreamer in front of the amp sims to make the distortion. And this sounds at least OK, much more like you are riding your Stratocaster and an AMP.
As soon I try to get the same kind of smooth distortion form the sim a nasty bad driven distortion hits my face. There has always been my assumption that true analog harmonics sound different than the digital copy of them.
So yes you can use sims as long you love to have a clean sound.
As soon you want to have something like AC DC use a pedal in front of the sim. But wait if tone is what you are after, use an amp - even if it is a crappy one.

I will have to add to the pile: small tube amps (single power tube) are the way to go. I favor Fender but that's just my amp of choice most of the time. The Champ is legendary for a reason.
I was using a '60s Vibro Champ for a while, but it keeps breaking down. It sounds fantastic though when it works.
I currently use a new-issue Champion 600 which has been modified for more bass and grit. It sounds almost as good, and doesn't break.
I run through an external cabinet 1x12 open back with an Eminence Cannabis Rex. It sounds very large in a mix when properly recorded, and it's not really too loud for home or bedroom. Maybe at night it would be though. The internal 6" speaker is indeed quieter, and good sounding, but I prefer the 12" for most tasks.
Good pedals, mics, and preamps I will have to assume you know about. Those are rules for any electric instrument.
Amp simulation is just not the same thing. Don't fight it, just accept it. But it can work if you are looking for something "different." My favorite is SimulAnalog GSuite, which is free, and very old.

Get a Kemper, keep it in the sweet spot and just tweak away. I usually get our guitarist's sound first, and then while looping a bar of his playing I'll have him play my guitar along with it while tweaking my tone to mesh with his. Once this is done I loop both our playing and tweak a bass tone that's going to gel nicely with the guitars. At mix I feed it through VCC, VTM, HP, and lightly squeeze it with an LA3a. If you can find an example of the guitar tone you like in a recording you can drag that into the DAW and reference against that as well.

Had the windsor for three days and sold it. He sounds very much boxed in he does not opens up. BTW I did try Sucffham-Amps simulation today..... they make the distortion part very good but the compression part lacks with crunch sounds in HF domain. I did try real hard to like it but using my amp was always the winner...... playing feels very different with the amp. It got better with some pre compression.....but mhhh

Low wattage amp or S-Gear. I've been using SGear exclusively for a long time now and have been very happy with the results. As has been said, pre compression helps a ton.

On the topic of small tube amps. I love my AC4TV, got it at a discount store for about 100 bucks. Gonna shed a tear letting it go, sometimes you just need the sound of a little tube amp trying to blow up!

I don't mic amps anymore, instead I use this: www.two-notes.com/en/hardware/torpedo-reload/ Great piece of gear. My amps sound just like my amps mic'd except it is done silently. If I did want to mic an amp I concur that small amps are the way to go, for this I use a 1-2 watt Emery Sound Microbaby. Scott
