Actually it's probably more like 4 ft. That 38% thing is kinda ridiculous though. Who is gonna put their desk almost in the middle of the room?

That would be 8.36 feet from the front wall.

Ok - so let's get this out in the open. I would assume you've talked to Charles, who talked to Dan who said my "room was not the best to listen in". That's fair enough. It wasn't designed by Carl Tatz. But it's 22 feet long, I have 6 inch thick 703 bass traps in every corner. I've also hung a cloud above the mixing position, have treatment to deal with flutter echoes and have the desk pulled out about two feet from the back wall. I would venture to say my room is more dialed in than many. So - if I was taking this the wrong way, then forgive me, but I assumed the insinuation is that my opinions can be questioned because I "don't have the best room to listen in." I would beg to differ. I think that question comes up in every monitor thread. It's not a dig from me, and I don't think from the others. I am just now reading this and I am wondering if the 15's aren't better for your room in general. I have read about these speakers for months and if I switch they will be on the top of my list. Guys on GS have said often that in their rooms the smaller speakers worked better. I think those speakers vary more then normal from room to room. The good thing is the line of speakers sounds similar so their should be something that works in most all rooms. They are high on my list of things to try out. All speakers need a break in period. So the 18's should settle in nicely. I will be curious if they get any of the punch back after that.

Who is gonna put their desk almost in the middle of the room? it's where your head goes, not where the speakers or desk goes. speakers might be 4' with you 4' away from them at the 8' mark in the room. Also, math is not ridiculous lol. dudes smarter than you and I figured out, via room acoustics math, that 38% of the room length is roughly the ideal listening position, because of where you end up sitting via the room modes and null points.

The 38 % thing was a great place to start before everybody and their brother had a TEF on their IPhone. Like many things it some how became this hard rule. When it never really was. It was also a big push against outing speakers right against the wall, this is a huge problem and even worse with rear ported designs. The consumer likes things simple and " move things around till they sound best to you" is way to much hard work so the 38 percent or the Audiophile rule of thirds are simple concepts for the buyer to adopt, and achieve acceptable performance.

It's not that we hate Ethan, it's just that Ethan knows Ethan is right and everybody else is wrong until Ethan realizes we right adopts it like He was right all along ! Then there's his soundblaster!

We don't like people that know-it-all...and don't preface things with, "I could be wrong," or "In my opinion..." It's all in the presentation.

JK, how are the speakers breaking in? Did they get some punch back like th 15's had? I am very curious about these speakers.

JK, how are the speakers breaking in? Did they get some punch back like th 15's had? I am very curious about these speakers. I haven't noticed much change, but they've had about 10 hours of use, so maybe not enough time. I was so impressed by the 15's in comparison to the Proacs, I think I was expecting some sort of new revelation with the 18's - and there hasn't been. I've found myself wondering whether the 15's sounded better. I didn't have them at the same time, but I did listen to them back and forth at VK - and there I preferred the 18's. Honestly, the 15's could've worked for me, but I wouldn't have ever been able to use them by themselves without the sub at any substantial volume - and that scared me away. But just from a sheer listening standpoint - and of course, it's from memory - I think the 15's might have been a little wider and had more separation. I think the reviews are right by saying they have more punch. Maybe it's because they're having to move more because of the size.

I'm not dogging the 18's though - I really like them. I just hope they relax a little more and get a little more punch. I might try turning off the sub for a while so I can work the woofer more.

Yeah, try and break them in more. In the past I have left the studio as mush as I can and had the speakers going at a decent level on shuffle mod in Itunes for at least 48 hours. I usually notice a difference after 48. But you may find the 15's are a little better for your room?

On my speakers, I'll put on a sine wave at like 20hz and leave it on while I'm doing laundry or something for a few hours. I'll do this off and on for a few days and usually they loosen up pretty good.
The aluminum coned speakers I built were pretty weak on the low end, but after a few days they really opened up on the bottom end. It's almost like they take more time to break in than paper/pulp woofers.
