At VK. I have Proacs at home, so I was just getting impressions without them being in the same room. Really though the imaging on the Amphions was kind've amazing. I thought the One 15's were a little light on the bottom, but the One 18's were really beautiful. They seemed to maybe have more articulation in the top end in comparison to the proacs and certainly seemed to have a wider stereo image. The proacs seem to be more "muscley" in the lower mids. Maybe a little more natural top? Not sure - if have to have them in the same room. Anyway, I was impressed by the 18's. Just don't know if it's a $1500 improvement.
The imagine reminded me of the Focal Twins. I could see how it might be easier to pick out issues in a mix. I will say this though - it seemed like I was always fixing on the Twins. A bit annoying really.

Would love to hear your impression after working on them for a couple weeks. Took me at least that long before I really 'got it.'
I had the One18's initially, but I think my room is too small for them, and they choked a little. The 15's are perfect in my space, and a bit more mid forward than the 18's, which makes it really great for mixing.

I would much rather pay for the 15's, that's for sure. Maybe I can bring them home and try them out...although VK here is kind've above us regular people.

the 30 day in home trial is free with you only paying shipping back if you don't purchase, if there is no return shipping then no cost.
is VK say something different ?

Well, no one offered to let me take them he for 30 days. They only had a demo pair of one15's but had stock of the one18's. I don't think they are honoring any sort of "here, take our stock for thirty days."
Apparently VK has just gotten them in and they are still working out the financing options. If they had that worked out, I would have gone home with the one18's.
Btw Matthew - thanks for he email. I emailed him back but failed to reply to all.

Maybe you should listen to these aluminum coned monitors I made and tell me what you think..

I'm always baffled by the word imaging when it comes to sound. The wider I put my speakers relative to where I sit, the wider the sound is. The closer together I put them the smaller the sound is. I can never be sure what is true from a frequency standpoint. After all, the sound source is being changed by the mic(s) and preamps. After trying my fair share of speakers, my belief is that it is a very personal, subjective experience and you go with what makes your mixes sound best to you- on as many different kinds of speakers, headphones, earbuds etc.- in the fastest way possible. I think it takes a long time to settle on what works for you. In the course of that experience, its important to listen to a lot of reference mixes while mixing a lot.

I think you can make any monitors work for you...it's all about learning how they translate. Some monitors definitely have a wider stereo field than others. I've experienced it. That's cool, but it can also make it sound glorious in the room and a disappointment when it's not in the room. I tend to want something that is revealing, wider imaging, muscular on the bottom and neutral on top...also, something that's not going to make me tweak like a meth addict, but revealing enough to get the job done. Honestly, the Proacs translate fantastically, so I really have no rational reason to look for something else - other than gas. That room at VK was designed by Carl Tatz, so maybe the imaging on anything would sound like you can reach out and touch it...would have loved to have had my Proacs there for comparison.

Hey Chuck, do you have a dedicated amp that you're using with them? Also, svartbox land with you yet?

I have a pair of AKG Q701's and the 650's really compliment them nicely. I'm planning for a set of 650's. Let me know when you get the SB. It's coming my way next and I'm hoping to compare it to my buddies Emotiva Stealth before his 30 days are up.

I'm really struggling with whether to get the 15's or the 18's...$1000 is a lot of dough...I'm gonna be using a sub with them, so I wonder if the 15's would be enough...Decisions.

Since the larger ones use a passive radiator for the extended lowend and I like many find passive radiators to be sonically everything people dislike about ported systems to the extreme. I vote Smaller with SUBS ! Yep 2 of them, It makes for more of a true near field full range systems when you incorporate a left and right quality sub ! Yeah it's not what you wanted to hear but to answer your question , get a demo in your room with your sub, I'm betting with sub you don't find much of a sufferance !

I'd be willing to bet the 15's will be a nice fit in your room. Having that sub will get you that low end thump when you need it. Will VK let you take a pair to demo?

The whole Amphion range utilizes passive radiators. I find the low end to be super fast and tight. Some ported speakers can be a little woofy in the low end, but I'm not hearing that with these. The phase alignment is one of their finer qualities. But, different strokes and all.

Thanks for the email earlier, indiehouse...You're probably right. Basically it's a 30 day return policy. I don't need these, but sometimes it's nice to have motivation with something new.

I know we all tend to talk up our new gear but the post purchase comments I have read are uniform ally positive and typically those people have had very good hi end monitors before. Monitors are tools and these may help you work better and faster: seems to be the consensus.

Pretty sure you're right that they are Seas. You're also right about paper/pulp. I have a set of monitors I made that use these: www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/scanspeak-woofers-6-7/scanspeak-classic-18w/8545-01-7-mid-woofer-paper-cone/And they definitely sound more mellow and relaxed than the metal cones I just used. However, the metal cones are definitely more "detailed". I'd maybe call it "analytical" sounding. They almost sound like less bass is coming from them, although it's really just free of the cone flex distortions that fill in and make things sound heftier. It truly is apples and oranges. They just sound different in some key ways.

I think they're custom designed for Amphion by Seas. How do you not like the look of these things though? They're dripping sex if you ask me.

Ha, they're cool looking! i just like blackness in front of me as i'm too easily distracted by shiny objects lol, if i'm looking at my display monitor, that's all there is, but I often shut it off to not be distracted by all the chaos going on in the visual DAW world, my new to be ProAc knockoffs will be black and paper/pulps. Here's a picture of what's in front of me for the time being, everything is black, not sexy, but focused (at least when it's clean and i'm not building shit 8). I know, i'm a goof 8)
