I am definitely gassing for the TG2 500. But alas, I survived the gas. Btw - horvitz - yours is clean right? Wanna tell us a little more about it? Yes, clean. The goal was clean but not sterile. I kinda felt like there are so many awesome and colorful transformer/tube type amps out there that something a bit the other direction was lacking in the market. To that end, it's a fairly simple 5534 design. What we end up with is something with very low self-noise (very quiet!) that won't add that harmonic distortion in the places where you don't want it. The op amps are NOS Signetics 5534s, which I thought were by far the most pleasing to listen to in a shootout. They earned their reputation well. One of the nice parts about all this is that my goals didn't require any expensive parts. I could deliver a great amp without it being crazy expensive. I think the low price actually scares some folks away (how can it possibly be any good??) but I'm pleased that I could get something together in that range. Inexpensive, not cheap. Overwhelmingly, after they use it for a while, most people tell me that it is their favorite on overheads. Not what I expected, but it makes sense. I hate to get into audio descriptive words because they never mean the same thing to two people but tight and focused and so on are what I hear. There's a demo video here:

Love my RTZ's. Detail detail detail, with just the right amount of monstrosical magic. Yeah, I made that word up.

Impulse buying can lead to the SamAshSweetwaterFullCompassVintageKingGuitarCenter two step.
Buy them all, they need to pay for their kid's college educations too.

Chandler TG2-500!!
Been interested in these myself. How would you compare them to the Neve or API sound? I don't presently own one myself, but I would describe the sound as Neve 1073 with a lift from 5 to 20 khz. Same kind of tone but brighter.

Why not try the rtz 500 series legend 1073 clone? Im gassing for that baby I've never used an RTZ but the description/philosophy (inspired by 1073/1272 but as if development continued, improved, etc.) strikes me - at least on paper - as being the same idea as the Aurora, Great River, Avedis, etc. pres - any one ever compare/contrast them? I'd guess the RTZs would be the most open (?) just from seeing the Lundhals as opposed to Carnhills... although the Avedis use Jensen. I imagine the green lettering is easy to read in a dimly lit room - is it as garish (Seattle Seahawks-y) in person as it is in their photos? The sound samples sound great - just curious. The RTZ weights more than any single space 500 unit I've ever touched by a lot. The transformer is huge for the class. That's where it gets it's mojo no doubt. Great design.

I keep telling them that, Cowboy, but so far, you are the only one who has listened to me. I have such good luck with them on all sources, they have become my go to mic preamps over everything else I have in the studio.

I ended up with a new Litz VP28. I don't have the older version here to compare, but from memory, it seems smoother in the mids and on top.

And a Neve LB will make me sound just like Neil Young on Harvest...right? An AWTAC channel amp will!!!

I'm going to vote for the A Designs P1. I still contend that the Pacifica/P1 makes vocals and guitars sit in a mix better than any other preamp I've ever used.

BradM why do you think that is?

I'd love to try one again. I had one for a little while about 4-5 years ago and it was a great pre...maybe a little on the brighter side, but nothing you couldn't make beautiful recordings with. I don't mean that description as a slag, I would describe the V76 as a bright preamp too.

BradM why do you think that is? Hi, I'm really not sure to be honest. It's something about the upper mids that I surmise is a function of the input transformer and the discrete op amp. It could be a distortion thing, but I've never analyzed it. It just complements vocals really well and allows them to sit back in the mix while still being present. Tracks sound more "finished" going through the Pacifica. Other preamps I had at the time all (API 3124, Great River MP1NV, Vintech 72) all made the vocals float on top of the audio and feel disconnected from the underlying track. When I heard that I knew my search for preamps was over. I have seriously not lusted after another solid state preamp since then...and that was almost 10 years ago. For me, I'm all about Neve style preamps on drums, and Pacifica for just about everything else, except drum overheads where I religiously use a True Systems PT2. I love that thing...it has one of my favorite bass DI's as well. Brad

I have a True PT-2 here. Squeaky clean and transparent. Sometimes, its just too sterile and now that I have the RTZ's, I don't use it as much. I like using it for room sounds, as it has good gain and doesn't color a ribbon distance miced as much as other preamps can when you turn the gain up. The HP filter button is set at 80. It's helpful to remove rumble and not need any additional eq if you are in capture mode.

John, you gotta get something super clean, I agree with whomever said that. Elegant color you've got covered, elegant clean is a whole nother thing completely, and just as useful. Grace maybe? Did John Hardy ever get his 500 pre released?
