I use both. Different amounts for different songs of each. But here's a delima that I find myself in a lot (and I would assume many who try to record themselves on a regular basis). I've caught myself trying to fit the performance to the gear. Not trying to overload here, playing/singing a little louder there etc.
I've found that's probably the worst thing we can do. If it's a dynamic song, I've learned to back everything off and let the ponies run. Easier to mix later than to miss an emotional take.
Every time it hear a dynamic singer like Martina who's sings from the heart, I think to myself how difficult it is to record that. But the payoff is worth it in the end.
So for a performance like that, 2 or 3 compressors might need to be used in series and automation in spots. No right or wrong way. Each song is different so a feel for the materiel has to be learned. That comes with practice.

Ughh I hate recording myself now. Im completely focused on sonics over performance. Ill end up getting the takes I want but it takes forever. Ive crossed that line and now there's no turning back!
I tend to compress for tone and control. Then automate to rebuild dynamics.

..Then automate to rebuild dynamics. I've never thought of it that way. I've always thought more in terms of fixing errant dynamics when in fact, it's both.

I've been guilty of some of what cowboy says, thinking of the tracking ahead of the performance. I'm working on it though, trying to find that middle ground where I get some proximity, but not so much that it causes big issues later. Some of the vocals I recorded earlier are a mess to work with, so I'd really love to get it dialed in and then mostly leave it there from now on.

I think most music requires both compression and automation. Compress for tone, automate for dynamic control, as warrenfirehouse said above.
