Putting a worktape down today...Probably use the 47, 84 and V76 on everything. I really hope it's terrible. I'll post when I'm done.

Throw together some ICs and slap that faceplate on a 2 space 500 series and you'd sell a million for just the looks...

Looks soooooo great littlesicily. Are you still selling one of those? Not for me just curious. I'm sure after having both spaces full it will be hard to let one go..... Jeff, I'm not "trying" to sell it. Would consider, but my feelings won't be hurt by keeping it. Sell one to Kennedy so we can keep it in the family. Then he can sell it to me

I'm gonna try my Helios with the Sta in the chain to see if compares more favorable that way. If I did get this, I wouldn't use the Sta in the vocal chain, so there's half the cost... And maybe the Svartmrcoffee will replace the ole' Burl. There's the other half. The moral if this story is this: "Find a chain you love and then change it."

Try your KM84 on acoustic thru the V76.

I will say this - a 3U size rack is not really something I cherish.

Try your KM84 on acoustic thru the V76. Yeah, yeah...I'm dreading hearing the playback... BTW - did I mention I have a mic for sale in the classifieds?

Find a chain you love, keep it and then find another that sounds different. Add another and another and another. Then, you can confuse the hell out of yourself when you are tracking a full band deciding what goes through what.

I will be in a minority I'm sure but I prefer JKs vox on the Helios. I had a V76 I bought from a buddy in Nashville, who used to work for VK. It was nice preamp but I much preferred the Neve 1084 and a few others.

It definitely doesn't have as much top (the Helios) and is a little more strident in the 2khz region. I started thinking though, once I add the Sta in the chain, it's kind' r turning it into the same thing. Sta + Helios = around $3800...V76 around that price. For myself, I usually back off of the 1-3khz for tracking. The sta usually adds a thickness in the lower miss and a little sheen on top.

I think Randge has it right…when possible, add pieces to the collection and then mix/match. Obviously, very few people (McBride) can have lots of everything. In 20 years I've never found one chain that always works. The V76 is a unique flavor for the sonic pallette and it's IMO the BEST in it's category.

Wow I saw Johnkenn was banned at GS and wondered WTF? and I found this...so cool - Thanks for doing this ! As to the Helios - I'm interested big time- Just bought an AML 1073 EZ and - I'm not 'loving' it - It's cool but the Helios seems more versitile for what im after...Thanks for sharing the post- I have a DW Fearn vt2 so - I feel happy with Hifi tube - but the helios has that tight but open sound - and then there is the eq...

I love the Helios. I find it more open on top than a neve and while the eq is rudimentary, it's awesome that it's in one unit and doesn't take up another space. It's a finicky beast as far as gain staging - not a ton of headroom and the distortion isn't pleasing in my opinion. But i usually gain stage it correctly and then use some sort of compression to make up the volume - it's fantastic.

Btw, mahasandi - welcome! It has been about two years since I've been banned over there. Silliness. Anyway, I started my own forum and I think it's what GS isn't anymore.

Totally - this feels more wholesome and on point for lack of a better phrasing -Glad to be hear - Yeah the gain staging and only being able to cut or boost on both freq's seem the only complaints. So with gain staging - I've heard it is like -30dbfs max to not get clip... I usuailly track at -18- ...i have tons of comps but im lazy and like them for mixing so thats how they are setup...
