I came from ITB and now I love hybrid. I would not give away my small, but very limted A+H ZED 420. Everything I mix hybrid sounds wider and deeper. And I am much faster as with pure ITB mixing..... Sounds crazy but that is the workflow I prefer..... I would not trade my small mixer for anything. Even using a single pair of analog EQ's as an analog insert on the 2Bus of a digital mix always opens things up for me in terms of depth. If I couldn't have anything else I would want a chain that at least supports that. That's why I mixed hybrid for about 7 years straight, I couldn't afford a desk at the time so I made that work for me. But the whole time I saved for a console...that's why I've been so down about it. Though, I think I've got a good plan this time around in terms of where to take things. Hybrid is for me more than this. I love to pick from SW and HW FXs...at least four physical sends, better six, is where the fun starts to me... I would swap the old console for a smalll format one.... From its technicals specs it holds its own against way more expesive real studio consoles....

I have to keep my console, because if I get rid of it that means I will fill my room up with outboard to take the place of my console's footprint, and I will stack that gear to the ceiling and use every inch of space that I can...lol

I'm thinking hard about an ADK rackmounted PC type build...with a few choice pieces of outboard. But that temptation to just buy a bunch of nice stuff is always there...laughing at me.

The capture is so important to me these days. I don't have time to sit and tweak for hours so I try to nail it at the source. So it's mics, amps and converters for me for level of importance. I can work with pretty much any DSP or outboard after that with a good result. What's printed to storage is what he have. No console or outboard or plugin can save a nasty capture IMO.

I could not agree more! What's sad is how many artists won't listen to reason when it comes to something so simple and common sense driven as tracking good source material. They always try to "fix" things in a mix...rather than letting mixing find the balance of good sources.

I'm planning an almost completely different setup from scratch this time...it's been difficult prioritizing.

I had a lot of outboard at one time and a big mic collection. I was a really happy guy. I fell on hard times and sold a lot of stuff...ouch (still hurts) I am in the process of rebuilding now, starting with my UAD Apollo Interface...I am also looking more on the used market. It is a lot more of a minimal approach for me this time also, but I still have my 52 channel console, sorry about that, just couldn't sell the console. Sold all my outboard and most of my highend mics....doh!!! I want my Bock mic back!!!!!

I sold off a ton of neves and analog EQ's...but I just couldn't lose that mic...the console...I love it...but...that mic is a requirement. I literally can't work without it when tracking. David Bock is one of my heroes.
