I've got some songs that are poorly tracked by me that I'm in the process of fixing. lots of reasons they are bad, poor acoustics, horrible mic placement, amateurish performances and the list goes on.
these tracks are outside the scope of my awesome collection of analogue improvers. As a result I've needed to get into the ITB thing again. adding distortion, eq, compression, distortion, etc to try and hide the truth.
I previously used a lot of variety of sound plugs because they sound great, are free and pc based. they are not however 64bit and so from time to time they stop working. not a problem as I stopped using plugs about a year ago in the studio but here I am again.
so other than the varity of sound stuff I'm chasing a few more free plugs to try. things like.
1. phase adjustment tool 2. tape sim 3. harmony tools 4. phaser/chorus tools 5. vocal distortion tools 6. limiters compressors.
I know the list is endless so I'm specifically chasing the good stuff. say on the same par as variety of sound and vladg sound.

Compressors:Klanghelm DC1A2, a stripped down free version of the DC8C. TDR Feedback Comp & Kotelnikov Mastering comp - both sound excellent SOR 8 (loosely based on Empirical EL-8X) - $1, sounds great, but a bit finicky to use Saturation & Distortion:Klanghelm IVGIHarmony & Vocals:Soundtoys Little Alter Boy, get it while you can Chorus & Phase:Bluecat - great chorus, phase, flange, eq, and utilities Honorable Mention:A1 Stereo ControlToneboosters Free pack - EZQ, IsoneSurround, OmniSone, TimeMachine (copy the dlls from the "Free" folder in this zip to your VST folder, along with the .key files)Pecheneg Tremelo - sounds awesome and has an excellent modern UI Eventide Ultrachannel was pretty sweet for a freebie, but it's no longer free I think

The Kjaerhus audio technology went into some Cakewalk Sonar on-board 64-bit plugins, btw.. Limiter No.6 and Molot from Vladg. Not color-free but nevertheless awesome in what it can do on occasion. Especially for free plugins. You can do some serious tweaking with Limiter No.6 once you got into it's GUI and understood how it works... vladgsound.wordpress.com/downloads/

Btw., the Bark of Dog from Boz does *exactly* what UADs VOG does. For free. Great tool for kick drum processing. For Chorus, besides the TAL chorus, you could check out Acon Multiply: acondigital.com/products/multiply/Also Acustica's free Nebula3free bundle AFAIK contains some flanger/phaser programs that sounded very convincing: www.acustica-audio.com/

And because it was not mentioned yet and i nearly forgot about it... The Yohng W1 is a bit accurate clone of the L1 Limiter, built from scratch. For free. www.yohng.com/software/w1limit.html

awesome guys!!
thanks for fishphone, that is one I used to use a lot. I also use the reaper stock plugs as well. whenever I am chasing clean eq, comp or delay itb it's those. recently discovered the reaper autotune as well which seems to work.
I've grabbed the acoustica bundle and the boz, bluecat, yohng and Kjaerhus stuff. The melda Mautoalign looks the ticket.
there are also a bunch of new plugs from variety of sound that look good.
fairly solid list.

Hi Randge,
what do you think of their amp sims?

I am not a fan of amp sims. I can never feel the air that a real cabinet makes. I have my Little Walter Tube Amps with a Miktek PM-9 and a Royer on the cabinet and stick to that. Even 99% of my effects are analog when i track electric stuff.

Not for free but extremly cheap one of my favourite tape sims. He modeld Studer/Revox and it sounds good to me. The demo is fully functional except that you cant save anything. www.toneboosters.com/tb-reelbus/

still working through all of these plugs but I wanted to plug a couple. no pun intended.....
the Mautoalign plug is insane
the new plugs from variety of sound. ie. tessla pro and thrillseeker LA are very good. on bass my old favourite molot followed by tessla pro sounded excellent.
the Tokyo dawn stuff makes me want to find a reason to use it.
pitch proof while excellent for vocals became buggy and I had to ditch it. one complaint is the idea of free with some plugin manufacturers is not what I think of free.

a few more observations
the melda Mautopitch plug!! yes!!! might need to buy that. I usually double track vocals these days but for stuff that isn't this is the go.
IVGI is excellent on snare. the freq response knob allows you to dial in the type of distortion. so with snare you can maximise the splat
reelbus so far is my pick far adding distortion to vocals. it does sound very nice indeed. I think it's more obvious than real tape but as an effect it is excellent.
I'm yet to get the nebula stuff working. so that's next.

I tried installing the free nebula but it didn't come up in reaper so I need to take some time to go back through the process and find out what went wrong.
am in the studio again tonight.

The only downside to Neb Free is that most third-party library demos won't load in it. So, however good you think the free version is (or isn't), just remember that the Pro version with third-party libraries is on a whole other level. Good luck!
