some strong recommendations for the herman to say the least! That costco chair intrigues me because i love me some costco! and if i don't like the chair a year from now i can take it back, no questions asked! Hmmmm, man the herman is STEEP! I could buy about 3 capi FC526's for the same price... Have you tried eBay? I've seen used ones in great condition for less than $500. Still pricey, but a proven leader. Pretend it's a preamp lol.

Buy a really good chair with arms and get a cheap armless one. Don't compromise on your main chair...

*I am editing this here... I don't mean to sound all evangelical... just that I once had the same reaction "1400..!!! for a f)O*&^ing chair!" I would open my wallet now without question. But sure, try something cheap , as always in our audio world, whatever works.* I should be more informative about my choice of the Aeron. Heres the thing. I have a back injury, goes back to my airforce days and a iriquois helicopter, long story. The Aeron chair, makes a huge. .. HUGE difference to my quality of existence.. there is no simpler way to put it. It was recommended to my by someone your size tonycamphd One of the mastering engineers here in Oz who is really tall and big. Yes, its expensive. Yes you can buy a costco chair for 100 bucks You can also buy Berhiringer C5s as well probably whilst you are there..... 8) and save spending money on KM84s LOL 8) I sit in mine.. every day... for really long stretches ... somethimes 12 hours. (with breaks) I have owned it for nearly 10 years. They from what I remember are guaranteed for 3 8hour shifts a day for 10 years. It is to chairs what the Capi Is to mic preamps.. you can buy a mackie chair or a capi chair... Hey if the costco gets it done... great... But the Aeron, I honestly would have a crap existence without it. cheers Wiz

I've had my Herman Miller for a year and a half. Mine's in the Mirra series and is very similar to the Aeron. It is without doubt the best chair I've ever had. I've been through tons of Office Max/Staples chairs--even their "expensive" ones. They all break down after a year and you'll find some piece of mounting hardware poking you somewhere. I'm in that Herman Miller chair 80 hours a week and it hasn't killed me yet. FWIW, I'm about 6 feet/190 pounds, so I am putting some mass into it.
The price will take your breath away, but it's one of the most important pieces of gear you'll buy. There are lots of Herman Miller lookalikes, but I'd say go with the real thing.

Went with an Aeron years ago and never looked back. My experience was similar to Michael's. I went through numerous office chairs and every time I thought I had a good one, it would eventually fall apart.

Stand and mix. You can't dance in a chair!

I bought a nice padded drum throne for use with guitarists. I'd get a used Aeron and a drum throne.

Well thanks to advice on this thread, yesterday, I went out and bought one of those $109 chairs from Costco. I can honestly say this is one SUPERBLY comfortable chair!!

I know this is an old thread, though I swear I saw a more recent thread about chairs that now I can't seem to find.
Anyway, one thing I haven't seen come up in this thread or elsewhere is mechanical noise.
How are these Herman Miller chairs as far as mechanical noise goes? All the comfort in the world isn't worth squat if mechanical noise from the chair gets into your mics (if you're using the chair in the same space with live mics).
I have a pretty comfortable chair I use (I forget the brand) but it does make the occasional mechanical noise when you move or otherwise shift your weight.
Are there any desk chairs out there that are purported to be really quiet or otherwise free of mechanical noise?
I already can imagine that this is the exact sort of thing that automatically adds cost, but I figured it's worth inquiring about.

So, a few months back I was keeping an eye out for a used Herman Miller and found a store that sells used office furniture that had gotten a batch of Herman Miller’s as well as Steelcase Leap V2. I went in and tested both out. Came home with the Steelcase and an extra hundred and twenty-five bucks. Waay more comfortable and flexible.

How's the mechanical noise on it? Any issues with noise when shifting around in the seat?

How's the mechanical noise on it? Any issues with noise when shifting around in the seat? Good question. It's a quiet chair. I actually move it into my B room when I'm cutting my radio show here. My old leather chair is there most of the time, and it's too noisy for that task. Fine and comfortable enough for video editing, but too noisy for open mic work.

I have a Steelcase Series 1 at work and I like it too. It's different though. The Aeron tends to feel a bit strange, like it's "too deep" but also a bit tight. The steelcase feels a lot less deep but doesn't necessarily feel big or luxurious. I bought a "big man" chair thinking it would be more cushy and roomy, but while it's "big", the foam is waaaay too thick and I end up sinking down into it and it makes my hips turn inwards and hurt after a few hours if not outright cutting off circulation to my legs.

My wife and I went to a big Atlanta Herman Miller distributor, with many other brands as well, to let her try chairs, be fitted and select options. The Aeron in small with all options won for her. Yes it was expensive but, the right desk chair, like the right bed, is worth spending time sorting, and spending what it takes. That said, my studio chair is a Sound Seat with back, arms and foot ring, I would not trade with my wife. It is perfect for me, perfect for the studio. After a few weeks getting used to it, I have not had a single day of back pain in the year I have owned it. My old chairs caused lower back pain, I wouldn’t have suspected, until I made the switch. www.soundseat.com/

Timely discussion as I have been looking for a chair. I’m sure the Aeron is nice but at nearly $2k here in Oz is out of the ballpark. I also looked at Ergohuman which appear to be sort of a Chinese Aeron knockoff but the reviews are mixed. A friend recommended a Buro Metro which he has owned for the past couple of years. His fiancé who has back issues after a car accident has been using it and she said it was the only office chair she could sit in all day. Anyway I tried it out at the weekend and it seemed better than anything else I’ve sat in so I ordered the current model. Buro Metro II High Back 24/7 with arms. www.buroseating.com/product/metro-ii-hb-24-7/I found it for $499 AUD + shipping

Alas....6 years down the road, Costco no longer has these. Any other more recent chair acquisitions going on guys? Any Black Friday chair deals? Thanks!
