Ok, so here's my deal, i've had the same office chair for many, many years, i've been meaning to replace it for as long as i've owned it 8) I have a few requirements i'd like to have met in my new chair.
1. It must be mid or low backed, my chair now is high backed, i noticed long ago that when i'm tracking or mixing, i unconsciously slide my ass all the way forward and sit on the edge of my seat because i'm trying to get as far away from the high back being close to the back of my head/ears causing a fucking up of the image (1st reflection points) It's actually a huge problem that i think a lot of us overlook.
2. I'd like to have collapsible arm rests so i can play guitars comfortably in front of my rig
3. comfort is huge!
4. I'd like cloth or mesh, leather seems to reflect highs a little too much for my taste.
anyone have a good recommendation on something that won't completely empty my bank account?
thanx for any info fella's

I have one of those Herman Miller Aeron chairs. It's been decent, but I wouldn't recommend spending that amount of money on a new one. Find it used and it's a much better deal. I've had it break a couple times and the mesh/netting seems to be sagging more over the years so it's not nearly as supportive as it was.
I'm not sure what I'd suggest in it's place though. I bought this one for 1/10th the price from a company that was closing.

They don't go down very far, but there is a bolt underneath the arm that allows it to be removed IIRC.

Herman Miller Aeron series, no question. R This!!! a thousand times... This!!! I paid... sit down (see what I did there?) $1400 for mine. Yep, $1400 dollars... a shitload of money. Would pay it again in the blink of an eye. No doubt... Close, to the best studio purchase I *EVER* made... have I made my point yet? cheers Wiz

I would buy the chair again.. then a KM84 a U87 and a 1073. The Aeron is to my back, what the U87 is to my voice. 8) cheers Wiz

I've long gone the cheap route and bought $100 office chairs that looked the part but never lasted. I finally got myself an Aeron and even paid full price, well over 1,000 Euros, but it's been worth every penny. Like with audio gear, you get what you pay for.

I always wind up saying the same thing when this question pops up: I own a Hermann Miller and it's nice - at $650 - but honestly I think the Bayside Metrex is a much better deal. It's been my experience with my own HM and the one that my boss has, that the lever mechanisms tend to seize up and break at the drop of a hat and getting them repaired is takes forever and it's a money-pit - the warranty on them is VERY limited. I've got 3 of the Bayside Metrex chairs; they're only $100 at Costco, always in stock and for the pricetag of a Hermann Miller you could buy a half dozen of 'em. They have the fold up arms that make guitar playing a real pleasure and other than that they've got every lever and gizmo that's on the Hermann Miller. For a c-note it's worth checking out and if you time it right you can get them cheaper than that, I've bought 'em on sale for as low as $69! (For that price you could always put it over at the keyboard rig if you don't like it...That's where my Hermann Miller is!) www.costco.com/Metrex-Mesh-Task-Chair.product.100117458.html

I've got the cheaper version of the Herman Miller chair that I've been sitting on for about 10 years now. Been great but it's starting to get a little sad. The mesh doesn't support the way it used to. I'll probably get another one but I did notice recently that Staples carries a line of Tempur-Pedic office chairs at about $350. They are sure comfy when you first sit down in the store! Not sure how that would go after a 10 hour day, though. I'm tempted to find out.

There are many versions of the Aeron chair regarding the arms. I have tried many different brands before and nothing has supported my back like this one has. You pay for what you get.

2 years now. I take very good care of it and it looks like I just bought it yesterday. The others I have had all wore out rather quickly.

I have a Herman Miller Celle chair in my office and think it's ok, but preferred using the Aeron that everyone else suggested. I've got a cheapo Stales chair in my studio at home because I'm not a baller though. It's fine for a couple hours, but wouldn't want to use it all day.
