Woohoo...just arrived...they're in the mic and burning in. My first impression is that they're richer in the mids and a little quieter...but that was from them being in the mic for 10 minutes. Check out the "MK-U47 first impressions" thread for more info on the RCA 408's... Where did you buy those John? I'd be interested in buying a spare pair. I know Dan has had fits getting quiet tubes, and he's still struggling with it. Once Dan got the resistor sorted in mine, it was quiet, but I think I lucked out on the tubes I have in mine. Dan mentioned that it's the quietest MK47 he's built. But still...I'd like to get another pair for safety - cause I'm keeping this one a looooong time. Dr. Bill, you actually got the quietest set of 6028 tubes of the entire bunch. Dan and I spent a ton of time burning batches in and testing. I got so frustrated at one point, I was starting down the path of gutting my electronics and starting over with a different tube. I finally settled on a pair that was almost as quiet as yours. They are still not to my standards. It's just a tad noisy for solo acoustic instruments. The funny thing is most people don't think they are noisy.

I wonder if Cat5 has his ? ...Shane's RCA gold-pin NOS 408A's have been sitting on my desk for about 3 months or more...right next to my Heiserman HK47 capsule (hint!)...he lives 10 minutes from me...guess we're both busy... Attachments:

Thanks man! oh, you must be going for "bright and pingy" now Is that a snarky comment Tony? LOL I just want a spare set of tubes for a mic that's "worth it". Thought as long as I was trying out other tubes, I'd give the RCA's a shot as the WE's are pretty spotty noise wise. Hey, bright and pingy is good SOMEtimes. I still wouldn't pull that mic out first to use on an ac gtr though. It's not the sound I usually head for. As far as "general consensus" is concerned, I have PLENTY of off-beat and "stupid" mic choices that I love though. Go figure. We're not all after the same sound all the time.... One man's band pass is another man's perfect. And vice versa.

The funny thing is most people don't think they are noisy. Yeah, Dan relayed your combined epic and tramautic journey on the MK's. As you know, replacing the resistor is what made mine useable. Before that, I honestly almost threw it in the trash I was so frustrated. 10 minutes of glory and then 4 hours of sporadic mega noise in the middle of awesome vocals. No mic is worth that kind of grief as you loose that creative muse. But now, all is good and the thing is off-the-chart good. I hope both you and Dan can find that "perfect" set of tubes. Best of luck. bp

John, How many RCA 408s did you get? I'm curious how consistent these are. It literally takes a pile of the Phillips or WE brand to find 2 useable tubes. That's if you are lucky. I'm considering the RCAs. Thanks, Scott I bought 2x 10$ WE 408 and they are quiet and sound fine. I dunno what all the fuss is about.

Best of luck. bp I went through the same grief with the supplied resistor for the kit. It would be quiet for a long time and then start spitting, usually during a good take. Turns out the resistor was breaking down under the heat generated. It was a 6 Watt resistor if I recall? Put a metal chassis 10 Watt in and it never spit again.

I just checked my bill from 2 weeks ago and I don't see that the prices have changed ? 16 british pounds base per valve plus shipping and handling ...yeah, but is that with the match fee?...the first time I posted the link they were about 10.50 UK Pounds per tube plus another 5.50 per tube to match... ...once he was approached with a "group buy" offer, that was all he needed to know...thus the price increases... ...and oh, JK, here's your other option (from what I can see, the RCA and Sylvanias are identical): www.ebay.com/itm/SYLVANIA-GB-408A-GB-408A-GB408A-Tube-4-Pieces-NEW-/121570831828

I'm saying that there's bound to be another dealer selling RCA gold pin 408's, right? ...other than the standard WEs and NEs, there's a lot of piecemeal, and gold-pin variants are very rare...I was researching sources for standard 408A tubes back in October...I found a large tube warehouse in Orlando that had some back-stock...he had about 30 tubes, so I asked for a price...he told me if I bought 25pcs. or more he'd give me a great buy...I purchased 26 based on the brands I preferred (asst. RCA, Sylvanias, WEs,and Westinghouse)...9pcs. turned out to be NOS gold-pin (8 RCAs, and 1 Sylvania)...I didn't even know there were gold-pin variants until I received that shipment...that's when I found the UK dealer online... ...here's the other source I located (these appear to be the same vendor): www.tedss.com/2099001413www.standardradioelec.com/GB-408A
