I've just ordered a couple of Warm TB12 Tone Beasts.
I'm curious if anybody has tried these on the mix bus? There have been raves about the CAPI VP28 and VC528, would the TB12 give similar results?

Hmm. that'll be interesting Les, please post your impressions when you get them. My TR12 will arrive late next week, but I'm only getting the one.

I was interested in these, but ordered a pair of VP28's instead for half the price.

I found the WA12 to be a real workhorse, in fact, I did a YouTube video demo about it, so I felt the ToneBeast would give me all the WA12 did, plus a few more options, like a cleaner vocal path if I want. It's kind of like two pres in one.

I was interested in these, but ordered a pair of VP28's instead for half the price. I was thinking hard about the VP28's. They would be cheaper if I already had a 500-series rack, which I don't. Plus the TB12 seems to be a bit more flexible, with switching for choosing different op-amps, different transformers (or no transformer), and different capacitors. Maybe a bit too flexible! The other thing I really liked is that the WA12 received great reviews, with a few caveats. They listened, and the TB12 more than resolved the shortcomings of the WA12.

Cowboy, your previous comments about the WA12 were the main reason I decided to give the TB12's a try, along with Martin's video. I would LOVE to hear a comparison of the TB12 and the Heritage with your voice. Either clips or just your impressions would be great!

vp28's aren't really half the price cus you need a lunch box or chassis of some sort to run 500 series stuff $4-500 bucks right there and you have to build them
the tb12 would do a really good job at mix buss duties due to its versatility, dual signal paths/caps, drivable transformers and different op amps
capi are great products too , but if you don't have a chassis they just sit there
the tb12 is an interesting investment, as you can also switch out the op amps but I think the stock op amps will certainly get the job done, ranging from jenson clean to character and of course the whole pre is api based
check out the warm website if you want more info
I have been waiting since namm for my 2 tb12's and they will show up next week.

Maybe not half the price and not the same feature set as the tb12, but I went with the CAPI. Still is enough savings to make it worth while IMO and the stepped switches win me over. Might end up with a pair of wa12500's at some point though. Cheap and look cool with that sweet orange faceplate. Haha. Haven't read anything negative about them either. Plus with a pair of VP28's and a wa12 I'm still in for less money than I sold my API pair for!

Once you have the lunchbox you have some great options. You will save over the long run.
And Once those VP28's are on the mix buss they dont come off

different strokes: depends how much you want to spend
i just wanted a nice pair of pres and I am impressed by the design of the tb12's and their range and as I said their versatility.
i have heard lots of good things about capi so wasn't knocking them!

hey les
i know the main shipment was stateside and custom cleared last week so i wouldn't think you will wait long. We have lots of great choices.
i was doing a shoot last march of gap73 and wa12 when I read about tb12 and emailed the company: starting getting to know Bryce and his design cred. i returned both and started saving for the 2 tb12's : really pumped to get them !

Getting back on topic, sort of, I'm eager to compare recording the Kemper s/pdif output and the Kemper analog output into the TB12 into the Burl.

cowboycoalminer I noticed in one of the GS threads, you mentioned that you very quickly found the TB12 configuration that works best for you. Would you mind sharing your impressions of the TB12 options, and which options are your favorites? I'm eagerly awaiting my TB12's, they should be here early next week!

Cowboy's "Martech" setting on the TB works beautifully. I prefer it without the pad, but the pad does make that sucker smoove.

Martin, I must have missed that, what is the "Martech" setting?

OK, I found it, ain't google grand?
Cowboycoalminer: All the settings on the TB sound good, but I found my honey with these settings-
Pad engaged Amplifier set to x18 Capacitors on vintage Steel transformer Around -52 on the input Wide open on the output
= Martech
and sweetness..

I just noticed that the above settings are similar to Bryce Young's WA12 settings, except for the opamp:
x731 opamp + vintage caps + steel output transformer = WA12
Has anybody tried to use a pair of TB12's on the mix bus yet?

no but don't fret it/they were designed by Bryce to be put on the mix buss if you want and you can run signal through them a variety of ways to colour the sound as you want
also gain and saturation knobs are stepped so you should be able to match the two units very closely
they come stock with the two different op amps; with the jenson being most clean but if you want super clean on the website there is info about other op amps you can switch in and I believe there is one even cleaner than the jenson
so very versatile
I have my two very impressed with build adn look but I don't get my apollo back from bla tell next week, so no interface !
warren at zen pro has posted a bunch of tb12 clips on his site !
