It's tough to use these amps in all their glory... I have to variac down which i have no problem with as long as you turn up the bias, and use some kind of attenuator which always changes the feel and sound(sux)so I don't blow any vintage speakers....

True sozo. Nothing like a nicely cranked amp. I used a Fender Blues Junior on one of my albums just so I could crank it, along with a THD 30 W. with a Matchless 1 X 12' Celestion. That cab was amazing, I'm sorry I ever sold it. The THD was a great idea, you could change tubes without biasing, but ultimately, it was just too nasal sounding. I was looking for a certain sound in my mind. I wanted the response of my Marshall 100, but around 15-20 watts. Eventually, I found a Blankenship Leeds 21 and it was a dream come true, but just too much money for me to afford it. At least I know where to set my sites now.
I had high hopes for the Marshall Bluesbreaker, but it was voiced like hell. I think Marshall tried to make it sound like Clapton on the Beano album, so they made the amp sound like that. It wasn't the amp, it was Clapton's killer Les Paul, cranked all the way, with all controls on the amp set to 10, with the tone on the guitar dialed all the way to zero. If that amp had been turned to 7, with controls in the middle, it would have been a completely different sound. I wanted to buy a Bluesbreaker, that was when I bumped into the Blankenship at Rudy's in NYC.

So after a couple years of neglecting my jcm800 because I had determined that I liked the sovtek midget 50 more, I tried the 800 in a session monday night. Couldn't believe my ears. Then I realized, I didn't have the CAPI pres back when I was trying to track the 800. The sovtek is super mid forward and with the api style pres, I think it might be a little too much. That's why I like it with my other pres though - which were UA and ISA. Now that I have api style pres, the 800 sounds amazing. Love it.

JD Simo is a really great player. If I had a $80K guitar, Id surely let him play it:

There's a crazy boutique culture on Instagram, I'm not sure how many of you are using that network (following the guitar stuff is worth it) here's some stuff that may interest you guys.
- Emerson EM-Drive (I've had mine for a few weeks, REALLY nice and his new one should be great too) - Sick As Overdrive by Bondi (on the short list) - JHS Pedals (too many to list, really would like their pulpnpeel)

Personally, I've never been a huge Marshmallow fan but I love a mid 70s non-master 50watt head with a single 1960 cab loaded with greenbacks for lead. Dime the sucker and use a powersoak if you need to. Likewise the 100 watt for rhythm but 2 cabs, loaded with greenbacks... dime it and soak it too!
The JCM800? I never liked it. Always sounded too much like a razor blade with bass boost.
