I bring one with me for gigs when I'm playing solo stuff (acoustic, amp, etc). At least in live settings it brings my voice a little presence and up front. Absolutely no mojo coming outta them, but good nonetheless.

Transparent, clean. I have four and I use them all the time. To me, they are great compressors, not just "great cheap compressors". I use them next to two mc77, two u373a, a 5-9c red stripe, an el8x, two 160x, a 165a, two Gain Brain II, an LA22 and a WSW. They are great when you've got a great sound and you realise "shit, I'm going to have to compress that". And I've never had a problem with them being unbalanced. I've also used them to duck the snare spill out of the kick drum beater mic with great results.

My buddy has one. It's utilitarian for sure but I wouldn't call it more than that. It can be good or bad depending on usage and settings, much like anything else out there. It can be somewhat transparent when used lightly, or it can be pretty pumpy when you drive it, but it's not pumpy in the good SSL-bus-compressor/API525 kinda way, more like a "soft limiter" action. It commonly gets relegated to second tier duty on backing tracks and things. But mainly that's because an 1176/LA2A combo gets used on the vocals exclusively.

Ok, I missed the "vocals" part. I'll admit they are not the first thing I reach for when need to compress a vocal. They are however a first choice for piano, acoustic guitar, overheads, kick drum beater, snare up and down, toms, horns, strings, accordion, double bass, percussion...

They are good on most stuff guitars keys drums but yea not on studio vocals. I use 3 of them in my live rig supernice works on vocals live amazing.

Use to have one, they're useful. One of my best guitar sounds was a 421 into an M610 into the RNLA into the RNC. Good box for good money.

John I have owned a couple in the past, and currently own a RNC and a RNLA, I also owned a RNP previously.
There are always available on the secondhand market and turn over quickly if you want to get rid of it. So in that sense its worth a shot.
However, having heard your vocals, I would say, other than purchasing it for interest, you would not end up using it long term.
Your chain, and voice, is really top notch. The RNC wont add anything of great sonic value, in your particular case. IMHO.

Thanks, Wiz...yeah - after reading this, it kind of steered me away from it. I'm just gonna have to invest in a Sta again...or a 176...I recorded some vox today and it was depressing.

The PBC6A is a different animal from FMR and I think it does well with vocals. It isn't super flexible but does THAT pretty well.
I have always set mine to not only compress a few db but also to thicken a bit. Never a complaint here.
