Please don't post to other forums...this is an RGO exclusive. If it ends up somewhere, I'll take the links down. Here's a PT's session from Sal's last nite. Acoustic guitars and I believe one female vocal. I'm just posting from the iPad, so I haven't broken these files out yet - and I've got a bunch of vocal examples I'm gonna post in a bit. This is just to whet your appetite. dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3607780/Shootout%2015.02.05.zip

I'm assuming the title 256 is meant to be 526? M means melcor 1731? and HP means hi pass, IC means Integrated circuit op amp lme49710? G means gar, R means red dot.
so that said, for the acoustic guitar(always my fav tester instrument), the 526 with the ic stood above all the rest IMO(what was the exact op amp layout on this?), the 526 melcor1731 was second and could be best in a stand alone track, the others were quite good, but these 2 put the guitar on top of the compression, the hi end stayed in tact and focused, that is always a good sign imv.
That is a top notch sounding rig Mr. Steiger! and quite versatile with diff op amps, i expected nothing less 8)
btw, the guitar don't suck either lol

Oh yea I was hoping there would be ac guitar tracks! tonycamphd thanks for the file breakdown. Agreed that the 526 with ICs are the best of this bunch on the strummed guitar parts, closely followed by the M1731, which sounds great as well. Crisp and full, retained the transients but very pleasant and sweet. Man, the 526 red dot version sounds awesome on the vocal though - really brings it out front, very rich. I'm thinking that Voc_06 is the raw vocal? You guys think the 3_01 file is a 526?

Sal set this up and honestly I haven't even looked... littlesicily, can you give a breakdown for what's what? I thought the ALL 1731 was the smoothest on everything, but I did like the bottom end on the Red Dots. Honestly, my least favorite was the IC version...

Tony was right about the labeling: 526 (typo 256) M=melcor 1731 R=Red Dot G=Gar2520 IC hpf=high pass filter engaged On acgtr, we used a u67/V76 into PT. Then I routed the file back thru each comp with same settings. For the vocal, it was a section I quickly grabbed from another session which was ELAM 250, V76 46db, 1176H 4:1 A1 R6. So it had already been lightly compressed. We then ran it back thru the 526 and 1176H. Not fair or scientific but was interesting to hear the color each would impart. Here's a pic of the track notes from the session for those who don't use PT. We also did a quick test of acgtr recorded with an RCA 44bx thru my OP6, Jeff's BN2A and a rental Retro OP6. Vintage still rules the day. Retro not even in same ballpark and not sure how they call it the same model. The retro sounds like a totally different preamp. Better / worse… ? Up to your taste and no point debating an objective "better"… it's what u like or dislike. But, to the 4 of us… is was also not debatable that the units sounded similar in any way. All the vintage mojo…the low end thump, the thick mids and soft top… all gone or different on the Retro. Gee… all that for only $3800? (sorry Retro, love your STA and 176) I've been told the Retro OP6 innards aren't even close to the same design. Odd. Anyway, back to FET compressors and the FC526!!

All of us last night thought the IC was last… and there's the reason Baskin Robbins offers 31 flavors! Something for everyone as 2 guys above said the IC was their fave. No right or wrong, just pick your flavor. jsteiger proves yet again to be a smart man by offering options via OA's. Really… this comp is a no-brainer. If it cost $1k it'd still be worth it for anyone wanting a great FET comp. At the kit price, it's just plain silly. I've rambled on about how I liked the Splice and the FC526 sounds every bit as good (to some even better) and it's 1/3 the price!

Listening again...the differences are subtle...Any of these opamps or IC's would be killer.

1731 might be the ticket here as an all-rounder. I do like the highs on the IC on the strummed parts, but it doesn't have the weight on the vocals. Red Dot sounds heavy on vocs. 1731 does both very nicely.
Or collect em all!

I have to get a pair of these! i need to play around with them myself, the main things i look for when testing a comp, is how well the compression takes vs leaving the hi freq's in tact(not leading transients, thats usually a function of attack), but on JK's voice 4:1, with the fastest attack and all 1731's, the highs are still great, that is cool! and seemingly the hardest thing for a compressor to pull off, id like to hear it with fastest attack and slowest release. The IC unit was super quick and lighter weight to me, and allowed all of that guitar to come through, and i think that is huge to be able to achieve that, those other samples were definitely heftier, and on a bunch of tracks would add up to mid/bottom fog imo. The great part is you'll have the power pick and choose to create different color roll offs/densities per track with the diff op amps choices, making this as expected...extremely versatile! The diff op amps seem to be less subtle in this compressor than they are in J's other gear, this is exciting. I can't get over the price per pound!!
