Ya know today I was thinkin...
Once again after last nights snow fall, I found myself outside shoveling snow. Literally for the tenth time this month. And I hear there is more on the way..
Now I have to inform all of you, I hate the snow, no actually I despise the cold, the winter and the damn snow! Always have... But for some reason, I've stayed in NY. I guess family and friends, and the biz was good for quite a while. (although I did actually move to Miami way back in 1980, but it wasn't for me!) Funny thing is I really love the small village where I live, at least for 8 months a year. Dec - March they can keep.
Also the biz up where I am, has slowed considerably in the last 5 or so years. So it just might be time for a change..
So I figured, I'd pose this question to all of you... Do any of you know of a nice area to move to, (in the States) in a more temperate climate, where an old curmudgeon like me can set up shop and make some music, and live?
I still need to work, other wise I'd close up shop here and head south for 4 months every year, but sadly, I'm not in a financial position where the old lady & I can leave town without working for so long every year.
I've just started looking at these areas: Nashville, Asheville NC, Charlotte SC, New Orleans, and will look into Austin later... These seem obvious, what if any am I missing?
Basically all I need is a house big enough to put all my crap in, and get to work. Don't really need two spaces, as I'm kinda diggin the in home setup I have now. As long as it's legal and possible where I end up.
SO let me know, if you guys have any ideas.. I really do need some input on this.... Thanks guys

I hear you, man. If not for my wife, there's no way I would be living in New England. But I will say this.. A snowblower goes a long way towards alleviating the shoveling drudgery. And hey, it's "Gear."
Do you have such a device? ..or are you perhaps in a more citified neighborhood, with no place to house the thing?

M57, Haha It's gear! I love that.
I'm very far out in the country... Got plenty of room for a Snow blower, but absolutely NO DESIRE to ever leave the house, to shovel, plow, snow blow, or what have you. I gotta say, as it is, I only go out to shovel when clients are coming to the studio, and or to get the car out for the old lady to get to work. THAT'S IT! Otherwise, and I kid you not, I would NOT step outside till MAY.

When I park in the parking lot at work (that I have to pay for), I still have a 3/4 mile walk to the office. Marching through this snow is the worst. Sick of it.

Best time of the year is when the season's change after the hot a cool change is awsome after winter the first weeks of warm weather so sweet.. Every climate has it's up's and downs

83 degrees here. Decided to wear shorts today. I was raised in Chicgo and when I was ten years old, my father said he couldn't stand another Chicago winter. We packed up and the family moved to Southern California. I've never been back. I'm 20 min from the mountains and 45 min to the beach and lottsa musicians.

moving to nashville in the summer. checked out texas as well. i don't know what housing prices are by you but there are several areas surrounding nashville that are very reasonably priced and there's no shortage of music. I mostly do corporate live sound/video so i doesn't matter where i live, and the milder winters in nashville, the music scene, the cheaper living seemed like a good solution. we'll see!

Geez, when we were kids ( a long time ago ) we loved the snow, not so much for the days off from school or to play in it, but to grab the shovels and go make some money clearing driveways and walkways up and down the neighborhood. Don't kids do that any more?

Yea, I loved it too when I was a kid. Built igloos, Sled hills, Ice skating in the park with the pot belly stove in the hut. I even walked to school in the snow. Now I won't drive 20 minutes up the hill in the winter when it snows.

winetree, my brother lives in Chino. i have shows in LA several times a year and we always end up going to rancho to climb mount baldy, cucamonga. absolutely awesome area. i'd be there if i didn't have a family to support and could afford a $400,000 house for 1300 sq feet! For now I'll have to be satisfied with visiting as often as possible.

I'm dealing with it too, all part of life! It's not this bad every year but some scientists are saying an ice age is coming. Think of what other areas have, Hurricanes, Tornadoes, mud slides, draughts, extreme heat waves.. take your choice. If I had to pick one area besides here it would be San Diego.

Having lived in California, and now in Indiana, I'd check out Santa Barbara. It's a very cool place, but its pricey. Don't know the music market there. I'm with mobeach about San Diego. Of all the big cities in California, that's where I'd live if I moved back to California. That or the southernmost part of Orange county at the edge of the LA megalopolis. If you're in the LA megalopolis, you're trading snow for other major hassles imo.

Drew571 Let me know when your in the area maybe we could hook up. Santa Barbara is beautiful, If you got millions. San Diego has the best the best climate in the U.S.A. Crowded. Orange County, I grew up there and I live in Irvine on the weekends, now It's like going to a foreign country, the orient. They Can't drive and they are rude. And yes the Ca. real estate is more than I'd ever want to pay for. I couldn't afford to live in the house I'm in ( I bought it 37 yrs. ago ) if it wasn't paid for and has low property taxes under Prop 13. So where's the perfect place to live, I'm still looking. If you find it. Let me know.

Just saw this...I would LOVE for you to move to Nashville with all that Helios love...I think Cobb is the only other guy here with Helios (besides my two channels ) My only question is if Nashville is over-saturated. Although, the rock scene has really, really taken off. Maybe somewhere in East Nashville. I know having a more esoteric approach and gear is well valued here - just wonder what the market is like...actually, probably still better than 90% of the rest of the country.

John, Yep, that's my concern, as I would be placing myself in an already crowded market. Obviously, you never know till ya get there, but it is a big concern. And once in place, do I look to work in other established joints, or set up shop for myself? Lot's of things to think about.
PS.... didn't Dave Cobb sell his Manor mobile Helios? I know it was up for sale cause I almost bought it. Although I believe all the modules had been removed, so he might still have them?

Dave sold the Manor Mobile sidecar (thru/to Duncan). The main desk frame is in Danny White's possession now. I think he is building modules for it or something.
