Could be a cool toy.

I learned not to spend my money on computer gear... even converters are hard to justify because 6 months... obsolete!

I learned not to spend my money on computer gear... even converters are hard to justify because 6 months... obsolete! High end tools are high end tools, still using Windows Vista, Cubase 6, SSL Alphalink, 32 bit PC just the bare minimum for recording machine. I never buy into the latest digital thing despite being an all ITB guy. High end recordings are made every day on lesser technology. I still think this thing looks pretty cool though, not the expensive ones. This right here would fit the bill perfectly for me if the price is right. - it gets the screen directly in my face out of my face a bit - incremental automation is a VERY cool feature that I'd love to have - manipulating plugins with touch would probably be pretty cool Overall I don't know how necessary this thing will be, I can't imagine this is going to cut into the time I spend mousing around projects and I'm content with the mouse, I doubt editing will be faster and most plugins aren't multi touch so you're still at the mercy of one parameter at a time. I also just switched to an iphone after constantly saying that my blackberry keyboard will always be better, it isn't so and I work fine with the touchscreen so who knows? Maybe Slate has something really great here. I'm a little indecisive about it and will definitely have to try it out.

Someone told me Guitar Center had committed to buying an enormous amount of the Ravens...their business practices continue to astound me.

I'm not interested in this thing. Too much or what it is. At $500 maybe

Yeah, I will continue to refer to this as "Slate's folly"....meaning the whole tech...Raven...MTI...because, A)it's truly useless tech, IMO but also because B)native Win8 and iOS will likely render it utterly useless and C)what kind of repair cost is there on a big thing like that? It's not easily/cheaply shippable. Does that mean Slate has a support network contracted to come out and repair on a dime? If not...the market for something that big and not self repairable is "new market engineers" only.
I think Slate has done wonderful things (technically Fabrice, I suppose) with the analog modeling stuffs. I'm a huge proponent. His drum samples cater to a very specific market-not my cup o tea...but, THIS....this is hardware that he's got to have a lot riding on success or failure--and it's DOA, IMO. He'll sell a few to people who don't have any experience with actual tactile consoles...and a few posers who are currently opening studios and want some kind of weirdly modern "bling factor"...but, in the real world, there's he's GOT to move them before the native touchscreens get well implemented. It just seems like a bad move.

Wacom makes a similar device. it's designed for drawing on, called the Cintiq. it's basically an HD display your computer draws on that you can interact with via stylus. it's pretty amazing. I just switched from using a trackpad to using a tablet/stylus for everything. i'll never go back to mouse/trackpad/trackball. Try it out if you get the chance..

I'd pop 4 quarters in it if I saw it at the arcade in the mall titled "Engineer Hero"

LOL. If you turn Miley Cyrus into Linda Ronstadt by spinning the "suck remover" knob fast enough...high score.

Slates track record is really good, I wouldn't write this off yet but I think this these touch faders are all hype and can't imagine it being useful.

Years ago i worked for a company that used touch screens for all kinds of things. I took one that was replaced for a customer, fixed it, and took it home. I set it up use for mixing, almost exactly like this and thought i was the cat's meow.
That was until i actually started trying to use it.
I was greatly disappointed that things just took longer. I could mouse and hotkey at least 2x faster than using the touchscreen.
I've seen very few products attempting to use ttouchscreens in this way since, but i learned why. They are very expensive, and generally the UI of the programs aren't made to be friendly with touchscreens.

svart you ever play around with an iOS/android device much? Just asking because OSX 10.9 supposedly has a lot of stuff ported over from iOS, which means apple is gearing up for workstations that are based around a touchscreen interface.

What makes the Raven better than using an app like V-Control Pro on my IPad?

Technically, it can respond quicker than an IP based solution. And you are working with the whole thing laid out in front of you....it's not gonna be a driver sitting on top of Mackie emulation or something...but, in terms of tactile control , there is no difference. I see little applications--I could see quick editing (ie just trim/fading things in an out-what I call manual gating)...and working with plug in GUIs a little easier. That's a different, too--you VControl doesn't allow you to interact with the plug GUI. But, still--those little wins are trumped by a huge amount of waste and missing the point.
I'd also like to point out that if you have a home studio where you record yourself mainly...and you spend more than say 5-10% of recording time "mixing", there's a bigger problem. So, to play devil's advocate...if this improves the mixing "workflow" a lot...how much is that even relevant to a home (personal) studio owner?

V-Control has the V-Window, which lets you interact with a small portion of the screen. the V-Window is like screen-sharing between your computer and iPad.

To be honest - (unless I'm thinking of another app) - I remember v-control actually letting me do a complete Remote Desktop control of my computer, and did it WELL. I also don't remember any delay on the control, everything was instant.
But I don't bother using it anymore - for the same reason I'd soon hate the raven. It's a touch screen. It's not real faders, not even close. A mouse and keyboard is better than fake faders

yup, V-Control's V-Window mode is just a VNC app. It's limited to a small rectangular excerpt of your screen (somethin' like 800x600), but you can select where that 800x600 is taken from your screen. Other than that, it's just a OSC-based controller that transmits over WiFi with fancy skins.
