No. No need for that IMHO. Jeff My man totally meant in jest, we all know Tony has a penchant for uber clean at times and he is just down the road from Jim! I figured you were joking on that E 8) the Capi stuff is so damn good that there is just no reason to mess with it, for me i'll often find myself giggling after inserting them because I can never quite believe how great they sound... and they're actually mine! haha, the Vp28 is the most versatile tone pre in the world as far as i'm concerned. Jim on the other hand, is the king of taking a piece of gear that makes you say... "awe man, so close..." to "yeah! now that's what i'm talkin bout!" haha..

I just need someone to point me in the right direction with the CAPI stuff. I saw that 500 mini mixer frame on GS a while back, are we going to see that this year or next year? I would love to start building a CAPI collection in a small 500 format frame. I have heard so many good things, but have never heard Jeff's stuff. Currently, I have 4 open spaces in my lunchbox and I hate this when this happens because it makes me broke trying to fill it!

You can't go wrong with any of Jeff's stuff but Top of my must haves is the Hieder Pre ! Lots of them!

I have heard so many good things about the Heiders. I have heard so many good things about all Jeff's products that I have the urge.

I would go with the VP28's. The cost to value ratio is through the roof. But to me, the absolute standout in the crowd - is the FC526. It's what the 1176 was trying to be.

I really like the missing links also. John, Have you used the Missing Links w/ VP28? Do you use any Heiders?

I'm as big a fan of Jeff's gear that lives, but i will be blown away if this is true, here's to hoping! I've been soldering for about the last 2 1/2 hours on this pair, now i'm soldering faster! haha

I really like the missing links also. John, Have you used the Missing Links w/ VP28? Do you use any Heiders? I think this would be a bit redundant. The VP28, as my very simple brain understands it, is basically a VP26 and a Missing Link together. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I have a pair of VP28's and I'm just going to quote tonycamphd because I share the same observation/listening experience. Not only are they out-of-this world preamps but are also the "best small kiss compressors" out there. I've even compared the wave forms in the DAW and they look more compressed after using them as line level amps. The VP28's are so versatile. I use them on the mixbus as well and find they add depth, thickness and a sense of excitement to the music. I agree with John that they are crazy value. Maybe best value on the market? Send me a PM if you want me to run some audio through these bad boys for you. I'd be more than happy to do so.......

The missing links are more of a refined vp28 minus the pre. It's basically an ACA summing section from a classic console, they can drive the signal like the vp28, but have attenuators that are stepped in very small and accurate .2 increments, they also have excellent high/low pass filters, with 6 freq point selections, they would serve greatly parked on a 2 buss, they are on my shortlist. here's the real rundown on these classicapi.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=22_117_120&products_id=222

Can't remember if you've posted, guitfiddler, but if you don't want to build them, I believe Joel Phillips would build them for a really low price.

I am going to get into DIY once I have some other gear squared away. I just demoed some gear and it looks like I will be sending it back. I have to wait for this transaction to get squared away, maybe next month. I do see some CAPI in my future! It's tough having 4 open 500 spaces in my rack.

Almost there, just a few more things to do and then on to calibration, these are Jeffs IC adapter cards with 2520 footprint, I added the 22pf caps and the sockets as well, the heat sinked AD4898's are the 2 channel version borrowed from my console for the pic, I have single channel versions on the way with cooling pad adapter cards of the smd to 8 dip variety, and double 8 dip mounting sockets, this should eliminate the need for the heat sinks on top of the chips? I will be testing gar1731's, gar2520's, Red dot 2520's, NE5532's, lme74910's and AD4898-1's, should be fun, the crazy heatsinked Ic's look almost as cool as the discretes, i'm betting the AD4898's are gonna give all of these a run for their money? What's the appeal of the IC's? They're can be cleaner and faster? I thought all of the opamps sounded better than the IC's in these.

What's the appeal of the IC's? Cost and ease of build are the biggest things. While the IC's don't sound bad, I think discrete always wins. I should add, YMMV.

Yes, discrete's are... discrete! Very hard to compete with the SL reddot. The 2 IC op amps that bring a smile to my face these days are the LME49710, and i'm pretty amazed with the AD4898, the later is the reason i'm even bothering with this, they are mostly transparent, but there is a quality to their sound thats very musical to my ears. I know they like the max voltage of their range, and they run hot! maybe that equals headroom and mojo in IC land? haha

Can I add here that I've been doing some soundfile warblings with different comps and man, the FC526 is just awesome. The control without fucking up the signal is amazing. Absolutely transparent reduction. At this point I'm reconsidering my $2500 tube "tonebox"...

Tony you've got to post some sound clips if you've got them. Nice build. I think my 500 rack needs some love, I've got far too many open slots!
I guess it's a question of when, not if, for more CAPI over here.

I don't know if I should be worried or not that I care more about the color of the knobs than the subtle differences between the DOAs. I mean, adding eq or distortion makes a lot more difference imo, but here's a difference that is obvious Attachments:
