I had one for a short time. Very flat and darkish. Sounds like my kinda mic....

Well, I should amend the "flat" description. I meant in the 2 dimensional manner, not frequency spectrum.

@johnkenn - I have this mod on a U87ai. Sounds great. I think Max pretty much nailed it. I think this sounds like a new U67 would. Vintage parts that age change the sound. That is why I think people hear this mod as darker. On a vintage 67, as I understand it - and I'm no expert... But the aged cap that controls the high frequency roll off, as it ages, the HF sound would get brighter. The biggest factor to me is the differences in tubes. I tried some different tubes and even while comparing several of the same model tubes - each was noticeably different. I tried 4 vintage telefunken EF86 tubes and the LF and HF response was quite different on each one. One of those tubes in particular sounds SO killer in this mic. Definitely sounds like a classic U67. FWIW, the stock PF86 that Max shipped with the mic sounded excellent - better than all the EF86 tubes I tried with the exception of the one magic EF86 which I left in the mic. And it was an old used ef86 from a tape machine - but it has "that sound." Neumann was picky about tube selection - and I see why, although I'm not sure that they used telefunkens in the original u67's. With the right tube, it does not sound flat and dull to my ears. Max did an amazing job on this mod. If u don't mind throwing up a raw sample? That would be great!

That survey from 1987 several pages back; funny to see the 414 listed as #1 and #2 so much. I feel like I stopped hearing about 414's on vocals not long after 1990. U67 is on down the list in every poll too.

U67s, like U47s, M269s, M49s and C12s are terrible microphones. But I'm a charitable fellow. I'll buy all yours off you for $50 a piece and then you'll be able to get some new microphones.

U67 is on down the list in every poll too. The UMT70s is a very transient fast sounding, pure microphone with a beautiful M7 capture curve and not over-bright. Whereas most mics in same price range don't have these merits. 414BULS as maligned as it is was used as M/S pair on Surfer Rosa, which is frequently cited as great drum sound. Also probably 414 version on shitty Harmony acoustic on Polly, both which nevertheless just fit the song. So I would say these mics are as 2d as the room and performer, even if there are other mics (namely U87, UM70, U67, KM84) that may be preferable in more applications.

joseph, the best Neumanns being made are all coming out of the Gefell factory and it's been like that for some time now.

I would say these mics (umt70s,415buls) are as 2d as the room and performer, even if there are other mics (namely U87, UM70, U67, KM84) that may be preferable in more applications. They generally feel 2D versus the Samar MF65's and other ribbons I usually prefer, so it's comparison related.

U67s originally came with selected Telefunkens.

I asked at that other place also, not sure, do original U67's have the same configuration head basket, such as one could interchange an original head with U87 or TLM67 electronics? For comparison purposes of course, eliminating capsule variance.

I've never seen a TLM67.

I think that has an extra pin. You may be right but the kit says its compatible with both. I do know the badge with a relic I of old George's head looks butt ugly and cheap!

A U67 head may not be compatible with a U87/TLM67 head, I don't know. If it is compatible, that'd be the more legit comparison of amp types, ruling out capsule differences. All of the comparison recordings out there are different head assemblies.

I think that (U87) has an extra pin. Yes, further study appears to show U67 with one less pin.

The TLM67 has the same pinout as a U67, however there is an extra guide pin on the TLM. That pin can be removed. Unfortunately, they changed the rail connectors on the TLM and those will not fit into a U67 head basket. I've tried.

Max posted an interesting mod option at that other place, maybe he'll pop over here and describe it in detail. Short version is you could give up the HPF switch and change it to actuate original response or an extended linear response in the amplifier. It roughly does both mods which many people have done to U67's, extend the lows and raise the highs, but it does it a little differently. I haven't heard the C17/S2 mods as done on originals.
Did the mod. There is a bit of gain boost (5ish dB) with the mod too, so you have to match levels for a real comparison. It is not a subtle difference, immediately noticeable. Probably much closer to what the Innertube preamp mod does if I'm allowed a guess. The mod should be very useful for ambient pickup which needs treble boost and a more extended bottom. Will now have to gain more experience with both to sort out where and why I would prefer either.
I did it a bit differently than he describes, adding an internal jumper so I still have the HPF available when in stock mode. With the way I've done it, leaving the the HPF switch in place, in extended mode the HPF won't do anything useful.
I'm curious if you do the original authorized U67 bass extension mod (S2 jumper), how the HPF works in comparison to the stock setup. It has to be different, I expect the cut starts at a lower frequency.
I had a look at a bunch of U67 pics, and it really looks like these have identical board layouts and assembly dimensions, down to the transformers incorporation between board layers.

Modding a 67 ruins it's best characteristic which is the ability to mike anything, add a touch of eq. and hit record capturing early takes before the musicians get bored.
