I LOVE my pair of 10dc. Couldn't live without them. Remember these are sorta modeled after a 33609 which is reflected in the controls so they're kinda intended for stereo use. I find that a little goes a LONG way with these babies. If the needle is really jumping you can for sure HEAR the compression. Not just the tone of the circuitry but the compressor gets swooshy and pumps like a 33609. I love em on drum bus or gtr bus or room mics or BG vox. I usually go retro 176 for vocal...hard to beat. The 10dc isn't a vocal comp for me. It's a bus comp. on 2 bus, just tickling the meter you can get a mix to smack and breathe but it is STYLISH. No transparent comp here! Btw JK, the makeup gain feeds the limiter so you're driving in to the limiter with it. That's probably the distortion you're hearing. The limiter is NOT subtle unless it's just really tickling the peaks. These things remind me of a 33609 a lot. Maybe not all the sweet adjectives that experienced 33609 lovers would impart to their beloved units but the compression character is very similar to the 2 or 3 33609s I've used extensively. Not a lot of middle ground...you're either using it in a fairly subtle, peak shaping way or you are unleashing a wild beast of fire breathing pump. This is not a compressor I would use if I want deep (-7 or -20 reduction) like one of the retros. But I LOVE mine. BTW my experience is that they are VERY sensitive to low frequency energy. And yes, 1 of them has a meter issue so it's gonna go to the shop for some fixin.

Any experience with a 2500 or a 1968? I currently use the 1968 on my drums and I'm not in love with it. I've really dug a 2500 on drums in the past, but I'm not sure if it would be versatile enough for tracking different thing and mixing. I feel like I could get more mileage out of the 10dc pair, but I'm not sure.

I should really say LESS than 3 db. For me the meters are just barely moving. No, I've never used those others but I WANT to!! In my experience, only if you're using a lot of compression. Lost control earlier & pressed buy on a pair of 10dc's. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

That's also the way I feel about the API 2500.,. A few db, no more & the magical make up gain knob. Though in the case of the dc10, seems one has to be carefull in that make up feeds the limiter. Not that some dirt isn't often a good fhing.

I like the limiter a lot on drum rooms but I almost never use it. It's just about exactly that 33609 sound. The 33609 guys are gonna clobber me.

What's normally on your drum buss? Have you used either of these on acoustics? What do you have on your master buss? Thanks man.

What's normally on your drum buss? Have you used either of these on acoustics? What do you have on your master buss? Thanks man. The 10dc is on my gtr/mid range bus right now on the album I'm mixing. Low ratio, med attack, A1 release. No limiter. Healthy dose of output knob. I like the sound of it better when the output knob is cranked up a bit. I think of the pair as a 33609 so I ALWYS use it in stereo. Drum rooms when tracking. Can't get myself to not use it there. It just has THAT sound. I try not to over use it though. Just get the needles barely moving on drums or...destruction. On the gtr bus it's working hard. 4+ db of compression in loud sections. It's URGENT. I don't always use the xpressor. It's my last choice most of the time. Not sure why. My favorite use for it is on very dense group bus work. Like if I'm compressing the "instrumental" part of a mix separate from the vocals (which I often do). It's a very nimble compressor. I do like it on drum bus but I'm exploring distressor pair for that job right now and loving what that does so that job is filled. I love the gain reduction limiter on the Expressor. Especially for drum bus when I used it there. That is a feature that, to me, is brilliant. You get the envelope and pump where you want it but if you need some peaks to hit hard and not limit too much you got it. I have more colored goo boxes so I usually go for those. On cleaner pop stuff the xpressor is a gem tho. Never used either on acoustics. My master buss for the current album has been SH dual Vandergraph in to Roll super stereo (both hitting 1 db or less of reduction) in to retro 2a3 and then some old transformers I wired up.

I've had a pair in a couple times for some mixing stuff next to some 2254's. sounded good.more hi fi.not as thick and gooey. still sounded cool on some sources.I liked them on gtrs buss a lot but in this situation the 2254'a thickness beat it on drums.

On the used market, the Neves are triple the price or more. I would hope they are more thick and gooey. From what I read, I feel like these seem to get relegated to "backup duties" a lot. Background vox, guitar buss, drum room, etc. It looks like they get a bit of a workout on drum buss, but can lose their spot at anytime. I'm still considering a pair, but the "positive" reviews are almost turning me off because they seem good, not great.

You're impressions are always good to see. Have to say, more hi fi tends to always give me some pause though . I tend to welcome the quality low mid richness one usually has to pay for. Look forward to hearing then in a few days. Not sure if there is a good & competitive pair of 2254-ish options out there (at this time) in their price range though Should be interesting..

The grab and texture is a bit different to old neves. Not necessarily a bad thing but a 2254 they most definitely are not. I think the the newer ams 32264's are good too but then they are different as well. I did not like the new 33609jd . Side by side Not even close to the older metal knob versions. I think the 10dcs are good at doing their own thing and in some cases would actually be preferred over the vintage units. Ymmv

Hooked m up. Super digging them. They have a kind of richness potential I love. I could see where they could have too much grab if pushed in certain ways but I'm finding some very sweet spots a the few sources I tried. Excited to have them.

Bumping up this old thread to see if anyone has compared the newer 10DCF to a metal knob 33609 (or specifically the Stam 609). I have a pair of the 10DCF and was wondering if the 33609 would offer too much overlap for drum duties. Currently using my DCFs primarily on kick tracking, as well as just general drum duties during mixing. I mainly track drums. My other compression is 2X Distressors, 1X Overstayer Stereo FET, 1X DynaMite, 1X 163X.
Was getting the itch to buy more gear I don't need and was considering a 33609 or an Audioscape D-Comp. Quite different I think.
Thanks!
