A bit more layout work done today. Started placing the local regulators after getting most of the opamps and their associated filters set and routed. I'm still planning on trying to get audio through the prototype ADC board this week. We'll see.

So today I powered up the hardwired board with the ADC and everything but the microcontroller. I see the oscillator output and the divided clock for the ADC looking good. I also see the digital streams between the ADC and DIT chips. Playing with the inputs I can see the PCM stream change, so it's definitely sampling something.
Anyway, I'll probably be testing this in the studio in the next couple days to see what it sounds like, or if it actually works..
I did see that the VCOM signals are lower than I expected. I suppose more testing is needed.
Anyway, I'll start putting the settings into the code so that I can run the unit from the front panel soon, probably next week.

A teaser... it works.. and I'd swear it's better than the evaluation board, but that might be the ego talking. Attachment Deleted

I'm willing get to be it ain't the ego!!! Hard to compare to the SSL, somewhat different tones. Between the evaluation board from TI and this one, I think this one has a bit more open top end. Probably because of the better opamps, lower noise regulators, and 10x better clock jitter..

Still have a ways to go, Nancy. But seriously, I'm pretty stoked about it working so well. I've incorporated all the small changes to the ADC board. If everything else turns out OK with using the microcontroller to configure the chips, then I'm sending the board off to have a bunch made. From there it will be amassing the parts and then building boards while finalizing the chassis design and finishing the DAC. The DAC stuff is going pretty quickly. It may end up going to production around the same time as the ADC and chassis after all.

Well that sounds like nice everything: big clear open sound stage, depth, placement, balanced tone clarity and presence. i'd say you are definitely on the right path !!

cool progress! how did you go about using this? off the 2 of your console back in? When you mixed did it feel more revealing than what you're used too?(what is normal for u?), give us a little detail of how the ADC made things different from your normal work flow if you don't mind? great progress btw, this is just so cool watching you do this project! pure audio geek gold man! 8)

Yes, it was quite a bit more revealing I thought. The top end lost all of the grainy nature that I was used to. I feel that the overall tonality is similar but the clarity is better. For me, I found that I could judge the high frequencies better. I always seem to end up with darker mixes on other systems because I suppose the grainy high end of the sound card made everything a tad too harsh, so I always ended up not boosting anything up top. With the new ADC I feel that I can boost the dogpiss out of things on the high end and not end up with any harshness whatsoever.

The name needs to contain the term "mastering". Who doesn't want a mastering converter?

Got a little more done on the DAC board, and I also got the ADC boards out to a manufacturer, waiting to hear back from them about that.
I toyed with some chassis ideas over the holidays, although there isn't much to report on that yet.
Moving along, but I have a few days of *real* work this week, so it might be slow.

Yeah - I figured it would be black like that, I was just referring to the turquoise light on silver face amps. Always liked that. Just joking around.
