Dude those speakers look HUGE....to be so close. Are those considered nearfeilds? I get the idea, J&MD....I just think you have to have a mixer or it really isn't as useful as you think it might be. "Outboard" doesn't really take a load of tweaking. Meanwhile, I promise faders=equal better mixes. Doesn't have to be a full spread, but you've got to have them. A mouse simply won't allow closing your eyes to adjust. The more you have to look at the LCD, the worse off the mixes will be. IME. That said....this is the nicer looking version of what my "studio in a box" was at home for years: www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ECR10/10ChMine was actually a custom ordered 15 over 18!! The top held a Mackie 1604 rotopod'ed so the connections were up (same surface as the faders)--and the patch bays were up there above it--so, I could patch anything in the rack into anywhere in the mixer---the analog 8 track, DAT, compressors, synths--everything was in the patchbay, normalled to typical channels, but I could easily with a few patch cables just break it and route it however. ' Anyway--build a key/mouse shelf onto the front (or buy a sliding tray for the first vertical 1U.....done. Not hella pricey. This is a cool little box. I do have the faders though. I want a pair of up racks to put on each side of the console so I have some outboard at my fingertips. Right now, I have to get on my knees to adjust my Summit EQP-200. It would be much more convenient to have it available at my tips.

Agree with this -- but I'll probably stick with a control surface for now until a more affordable automated console (or CAPI console) comes along. If I mod/diy something like the Plan Uno, it will definitely have room for a control surface at the front.

Here is my answer to every thread like this if DIY is out find a local cabinet builder! In this day in age you would be surprised what you can get locally and your options are only limited by your wallet

There's a really old picture of what I built to sit the mixer on. The frame is made from doubled up rebar, welded together, with wood screwed to the top for both the monitor shelf and the main top. you could probably do something similar if you had access to a welder. Rebar is cheap and easy to cut/weld.

Thanks man. I actually came across this one when searching. My console wouldn't fit, but it would give me nice space for my rack gear. NY isn't a realistic trip for me now though. I think it's going to come down to me trying to build something.

Dude those speakers look HUGE....to be so close. Are those considered nearfeilds? Didn't use them Just placed them there at first. Using NS-10s with a sub placed in the lower center section, Auratones and some smaller nearfields. Stereo soundfield is great. Placed a 37" L.C.D. monitor between them.

I have one of those sidecars too -- they're quite nice for the money. The desk won't work for me because I don't like the lcd monitor to be that high, and the shelf would interfere with my monitor (speaker) placement. What I don't like is turning my head 90 degrees to make EQ changes in the sidecar... I feel like I don't use my gear as much or as effectively as if it was sitting in front of me.

Very good points and I agree there is better but not in that price range. I got use to the monitor height and my stands work ok. I too didn't like too many adjustments from a side car but I then thought about the guys whose rack is completely behind them so I chilled. But every place and use is different. Good luck on the hunt.

Good luck on the hunt. Yeah I initially justified the side placement for the same reason "it's gotta be better than having the rack behind you." And I guess that works for a lot of people, but I'm just no gelling with it. At least with your set up you have some rack space in front of you that you could use for some EQ's/comps/whatever. But my monitors (PSI A21m) really need to sit further back so that shelf just won't work. That does give me an idea ....I could put at least 1 500 series rack in front of me in a 3 u case, and push my monitor back and prop it up a bit. That would be a decent temporary fix. Thanks for the input -- hashing these things out with other brains can really help spur new ideas, many of which should have been obvious in the first place, but it's so easy to get hung up on certain ways of doing things.

Nice desk. Approx $5K in faders though. Ouch.

Must be nice to have money.
Since that desk is useless without them (they sit down IN)....I'd say that's about $7k in desk and faders-package deal. In the grand scheme, that's actually not absurd. Well--I mean--it's absurd....all these controllers are absurd, IMO--but, compared to a big installation of MCUs or any of the bigger Avid units...that's pretty slick looking. I'd buy that if I had someone to impress.
I particularly like the logic that the staging guy has 32x32 Apogee IO....and 32 channels of summing with a single channel input. Pimp! So, is that exactly 31 channels of unneeded input? Eleven Rack? Because, sure--you want 32 channels of premium DAC feeding classA summing....and an amp modeler.

Forgot to mention that they offer filler panels to fill the gap in case you don't have or plan to use the controller. I think the cost is about $50 but I got it for free

A local cabinet maker would do the cabinet for far less! That's how you do it and have money for gear!

The Sterling Uno is a VERY elegant solution, I would buy one in a heartbeat if I had a place.

I went ahead and ordered the Odyssey 12 space slant rack, with the intention of tipping it back and building a simple desk around it. Thanks for the suggestion jcoutu1! I received it today, and I'm gonna go pick up some 1x4's to make some legs and support... I'll post a pic of it when it's finished.
