I've got a Brent Averill, but occasionally have PS issues with some units. What are the pluses of the 51x? It's 11 slots, right? What's the cost? Do you have to build it yourself?

Well, technically the format has 18 pin card edge where the first 15 are like the 500 series, pin 16 n/c and 17/18 are +-24V rails. This makes some specials possible. E.g. +24V circuits of the german broadcast era (Neumann/Siemens/TAB/NTP etc.) and modules that can make use of the higher voltages concerning the used (discrete) opamps. I do not know if readily assembled units are available, but i guess Volker(51xaudio) might chime in soon with more details about pricing and availability. (or jeff...)

Jeff sells em, they are easy to build if you can handle the iron even decently, the problem is the PSU is a little more complex, but still doable if you are good at following directions, which clearly you are not John, thats why you had to start your own forum!!!! Lol! I've never read the rules over there either, i already like your forum better, and its been about 7 hours !

technically smalbutfine explains it correctly. you can find some further information like a little history here: www.51xaudio.com/alliance/index.htmlwe do only sell in kit form, for different reasons (costs, place, shipping, legal stuff like VDE / CE etc). however, if you don't want to build it yourself you will find somebody doing it for your. but it is really an easy built, I guess it is more complicated to run a forum ... up for now we have sold 500 to 600 racks, I guess the half went to first-time-builders, with nobody having major problems.

The build is a pretty easy one. If a person has built cables or made simple repairs, he/she should be able to tackle this thing. I'd imagine the Floor Box PSU might be a little intimidating for someone who hasn't done anything like that before (and you're dealing with higher voltages), but the instructions are clear and easy to follow. Just be careful and double check everything!

See - it's the "just be careful, you could die" part that worries me a skoche...

I built 3 racks, and 3 power supplies, all from Volker-51xAudio- [silent-arts]. Super easy, very good, on all the time. I believe Volkers psu is not available anymore, but 'guess' Jeff psu will preform great.(based on the 8 CAPI units I built) Rrrrrecommended!

You'll only die if you do something stupid! Keep one hand in your pocket when you're poking around in anything with voltage on it.

I believe Volkers psu is not available anymore, but 'guess' Jeff psu will preform great. I still do sell PSU PCBs, and the PSU TRX is the same like in Jeffs PSU - but I don't sell part Kits for this anymore. Jeffs PSU is basically the same, and to keep my stock clean and simple: for full part kits I only have Jeffs wonderful Floor-Box PSUs in stock.

See - it's the "just be careful, you could die" part that worries me a skoche... You can always die dealing with mains voltages. However, you are in the US an have 115V, you only die half compared to us EU or australian people It is a good sign if it worries you. If you decide to DIY (or even have a look and open a commercial "mains voltage" product), you will be careful! Always stay safe!!!

I'm very sorry for spreading incorrect info. (Assumption, the mother of all fuckups...)
It is good the goodies are still sold, also, that you have Jeffs Floorbox in stock means goodness.
humbly yours Pieter.

Nothing wrong Pieter. I do not advertise the "old" PSU PCBs anymore, however, we do still have some if needed.

AC mains are still safer than DC. AC gives you 50/60 chances a second to let go of a conductor! DC just locks the muscles up and you fry!

I prefer AC shocks. However, the DC shocks in this Topic are safe ;-) Svart, where have you been all the time?

Hi
I built them from the 51x guy in UK (Cemal). Cemal is a great guy, unlimited support via email, very patient. his kits come really well packaged and well identified. I have to say no PSU problems whatsoever. The rack can be built in one evening, the PSU in an afternoon if you are good with your iron and cabling.
Just pop by groupdiy.com and look at "newbie builds 51x" because there are some good things to know that will avoid headache in the future (like a workaround for the jumpers which MAY interfere with some 500 series chassis).
I say the price is similar to the API VPR but has more slots, and the optional +-24v rail. If you have 51x modules, you can power 2 racks for little more money and then it really shines! you can have 2 racks for slighlty more than the price of one!!!!!!
I've had several mixes at mine over the past few weeks. I have some cool gear and I borrowed tons of exotic vintage gear. The 51x got the compliments believe it or not!
Another thing: Cemal still builds 2u dual supply. This means you can power 2x 11slot of VPR (+-16v) and 2x 11slot of 51x (+-24v).
I believe cemal will be doing something about a 1u supply for those of you that like me prefer to have the darn things racked rather than bumping around

Poor Topsy, yes. But we are neither speaking of 6600 Volts AC nor DC ;-) You can do it without any harm.

just buy a big bertha soldering iron. Or something with NUKE function. Those ground planes are hard to solder without using a solar flare. or a space shuttle engine.

51xaudio, I only rarely stopped by GroupDIY to read stuff. There was some off-forum drama between myself and a couple ex-groupDIY members that turned me off of the forum.

I bought the 51X rack/PSU from Jeff - it was my first DIY build, but I'm fairly experienced with a soldering iron. I had only VERY minor problems, mostly stemming from skipping steps/skipping ahead from the Chunger thread. If you follow what he does, you literally cannot go wrong. As was mentioned earlier, though, when checking voltages with your multimeter, be EXTREMELY careful what you touch! I fried one fuse when I slipped off a test point. Have used the rack with VP28's, and everything works perfectly. Love it. Great value, easy build. So glad I discovered Jeff's stuff from you guys' threads at (can I say the name here? =) ) Gearslutz. Mucho gracias, amigos...

I'm scared to death of DC, especially in tube circuits, my U47 clone zapped me when i was building it, but thankfully it was in the mic(not power supply) when it got me! 105v hurts, but unloaded 400vdc is a real bad day!
