Beyer ribbons are straight up tiny, almost microscopic. I think in the chinese mics, the long ones are flatter sounding, and the short ones have more of a mid focus, or somesuch.

I guess I'd be a little nervous of the quality control, even at that cheap price. If we're talking cheap ribbons No Hype Audio assembles a very reasonable one from Chinese parts that mimics an RCA 44. I don't own it yet, but JP is one of the best dealer/audio guys out there--I bought a couple of CM3s from him. No Hype Ribbon mic

I modded my panthers a few months ago and did a shoot out between the stock panther, the modded and the vin jet with Lundahl. On my site youtube kcatthedog there is a previous shoot out between my octavamod sdc and the panthers , if you want to hear that comparison too.

No Hype Ribbon mic...Yes JP is a great guy and I agree the QC on his No Hype ribbon mics is exceptional, but these JRR NOS ribbon mics appear to have pretty decent QC from the factory...the Chinese have greatly improved their quality on these cheap ribbon mics (if you read JP's comments about assembling his mics, he states he rarely has to re-tension or replace a ribbon motor from the factory)...and since many of the Chinese factory's brand-name clients demand lighter-grade foil ribbon elements, (to answer Tony's question) it seems even many stock OEM versions now come with 2.2um aluminum ribbon...besides, the "Fathead" style ribbon mics employ a short-ribbon element, unlike JP's long-ribbon style mic, so they tend to be much less vulnerable to sag and misalignment...
