I met him at a party after the premier of the movie "Punch Drunk Love" at the NY Film Festival in 2002. I had a brief story to tell him, I'd seen his first show in NY at CBGB by accident. Now, maybe 15-20 people were there, just the crowd who hung out, so it was highly unlikely he'd ever met anyone who was there, so I thought he'd have some kind of interest or reaction, but he was deadpan indifferent. I know some folks who know, and he was smacked out. It was a bummer. I saw his previous NY show around 4 years ago, and it was superb. I wish him well, he's great artist. Wow, I'd never heard that he used smack. (but what do I know) Heartbreaker's bassist Howie Epstein did and died from it in 2003. Could there be confusion? Like McCartney and others, Petty's a pretty proud pot smoker. It's disappointing when you meet an artist and they act that way. However, how many times a year does he gets told the same story like "Remember when you played Pauls Mall back in '78? I was there!" Its like that very funny skit on SNL when Chris Farley interviews Paul McCartney and says "Remember when you were in the Beatles?"

Of course, I can't be completely sure, but I got that from someone I've known for over 30 years who's on the inside of the music business. I hope it was just a rumor, but he did display the signs of someone pretty deep into some kind of substance use. I take your point regarding a star like TP and the gazillion attempts to communicate he must have to field all the time. That said, the people at that private party wouldn't have been there if they didn't belong, it wasn't open to the public. Standing right next to me was Julia Roberts, so if I struck up a conversation it wasn't as a fan. I mentioned I was signed to Mercury when he was at CB's, so he would obviously know I was a recording artist. Even a superstar would normally have responded differently if he wasn't interested in chatting. Who knows, but his music speaks for itself. I'm glad any great guitar band can still make a living !

In my days of studio managing I had the misfortune of meeting many of my musical Heros, more than a handful of which I spent my teenage pocket money on their records when I was otherwise dead broke.
My takeaway is that I'd much prefer simply having their music to cherish and enjoy, because knowing them as human beings can ruin my ability to appreciate their art...

One of my favorite things about Ferrone is that he will play the groove forever and make you WAIT for a fill...and you wait. And when he finally gives you one, it's perfect. And it's immensely satisfying because of how he built up to it... Steve refers to "fills" as alternate extensions of the groove, "fills" are for drummers who play parts not music 8) Ok, i said this, but i bet Steve agrees

My drumming has very few fills, mainly because I don't know how
