Retracked the acoustic part on this tune using the 992. To me, it stands out in this mix as being the best part of it. Loving this thing. https%3A//soundcloud.com/herb-music/other-side-of-townBTW, MJB wrote this great tune. sounding real good cowboy! I don't know if i agree with the whole 500 vs standard rack gear voltage theory, if equipment is designed properly, and it's getting its required power, it shouldn't matter, your console is running on 17v rails if it's a soundcraft, and a channel strip is probably slightly more demanding than a single 500 series unit that has 15v rails, 51x boxes have 24v rails also, but it seems no one is building for them, which is too bad, instead designers use voltage dividers and more parts(higher costs to us) to achieve the higher voltage to run neve type stuff, still sounds the same though. Running your gear on a nice filtering balanced power supply would probably make everything you own clean and smooth up a bit, not to mention last longer...at least in theory anyway.

I finally got around to hooking this thing up to the patch bay. So I ran a mix through it this evening... holy shite. Instant butter. Less compression needed and just a much fuller mix. No line input so you really have to mind your levels but it's worth the extra work. Wow. Must be significantly different than the 500 series pair I had. Honestly, there were about the most bland preamp I've ever used aside from the standard 2019 style pre's. Solid, clean, transparent, and slightly bigger than life, but..... I originally thought I might move up to a 992, but after the 500 series I changed my mind. Do you have clips of the mix pre/post 992? Love to hear that if you've got it.

The 500 thing kind of worked OK for API..... Having a great power supply is the lifeblood of ANY piece of gear. Most 500 enclosures are not designed to a high level of performance.

Re-tracked the Lead vox using the 992. I didn't have the Sta set correctly and I hit it with too much gain in spots as well. All that said, there are certain parts of this vocal where you can hear the absolute brilliance of this pre. I'll keep working with it until I find it's sweet spot. It is truly the good stuff. Just sounds like being in the room with something. db.tt/OWe29AMn

BTW, that was one pass and with NOTHING on the strip in the mix except a touch of HPF. That's just how it sounds.

Yep That's why I use a DDA console PSU trimmed down! I do think Jeff's CAPI Supply is pretty nice , probably the best of the purpose built 500 PSUs !

My next 500 PSU will be from a D&R console. It's huge and will power 4 racks with individual on/off switching for each rack....
