This has been talked to death, but I didn't pay attention, so how about some more? I saw that jimwilliams liked the Adcom 545's... I'm a little nervous about leaving the Focal Solo's...but wth? Mistake?

I wish I had a good solution for ya, but I've only used powered speakers and ns10s. I have a friend with a rotel amp in his hi-fi system that sounds great. We shot it out against a pair of vintage mcintosh mc50's and it sounded more like a record than the Mc's. The mc's sounded more raw. Now sure how these would be in a studio setting with the pro ac's though. Good luck man!

Wonder if a Bryston 3B would be enough? There's a good price on ebay...

I've used the 3b, 4b and 4b st. They are fine power amps. The 3b is enough for my control room moving these guys. How big is your room? How is it treated?

22'x12'...Treated by me - 2'x4' 6" thick bass traps in all corners. 6 2'x4' 3" thick absorbers around the room and aurelex on the A frame ceiling to prevent flutter. Might be over-treated. It's dead as a doornail. I think the 3B would be enough, the trouble is finding one. I know littlesicily swears by the McIntosh 2100...and there's one on ebay right now...

I'd get something hefty. I moved to powered speakers a while ago, but one thing I learned is you can't over amp a passive speaker. Just don't overpower it..
Seriously though, it takes significant instantaneous power to get a speaker to move fast enough to reveal details in the audio.

My room is smaller and although it's treated, I wouldn't say it's "dead as a doornail". I rarely have musicians playing in he control room so I don't need to get ultraloud. Having said that, I do turn it up to check the bottom end. It does get loud, that's for sure. Hard to say if the 3b is the right choice for your speakers...

Mistake? I had jim do this 2 weeks ago, in typical JW fashion, it is insanely badass! And i haven't even upgraded my monitors yet?? This is the adcom 555, I modded the face with my favorite, flap pad grinder, looks cool huh? This thing with a good set of passive monitors will smoke just about any active monitors out there that i'm aware of? An audiophile power amp of similar performance will run in the just under $10K range, no shit!

Tony - what does it sound like stock? It always sounded really nice, but since 1999 i used my mackie hr 824's for convenience sake, i had the adcom hooked up to a set of KRK's in my torture room 8), now with the mod, the KRK's are killing the mackies, i have to figure out new passives now, damit! I'm intimately comfortable with the HR824's, but this sound is incredible, the headroom and seeming precision is friggin awesome! The amps can be had for between 2-300$, the mod is $200. I've had this amp since 1993 with content, but never excitement until now.

It sounds magical if it can make mackie monitors sound good.. Hey!, easy on my mackies svart!!! I do know them pretty well though, and thats big!, i'm interested to see how quickly i could adjust to something of higher quality? Also, to clarify, I did say the amp make the KRK's sound better than my mackies, i can tell with a great set of passives, this amp is going to bring my monitoring to a higher level FS! not to hijack, but anyone have some suggs on passive monitors? thanx T

Honestly, the biggest leap I made was going to a set of vintage passive Auratones. That and going for a higher quality powered system.
I use the auratones for mixing the midrange and getting rough levels and then use the JBL actives to do the rest while periodically using the auratones to make sure there isn't anything offensive in the midrange. I've tried all kinds of monitors including the mackies, KRKs, Fostex and so forth for monitors to no avail, but that's just me. I liked the Yamaha MSP7 but once I got around to trying the JBLs I was done. Every mix translates exactly as I hear it. I guess to each his own..

Here's the thing - used ProAc's and an Emotiva XPA-2 ran me $2500. And this setup is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar better than the Focals. I'm gonna chime in on the power amp after I've had a belly full of it.

Ray Kennedy was singing Emotiva's praises several months ago.

Ray - my long lost brother...Freaking love the Chris Knight stuff! Never met Ray, but he mastered a record I mixed for a guy named Dave Pahanish. Sounded great!

Glad you like them! Speakers are so personal, I have had and auditioned MANY high end speakers and even built lots of them. For me... I hear perfect on the Focal Solo... I almost never miss, I will not change for a long time.

Well - I agree...personal. I think the Focals, frequency-wise are pretty flat and true...but there was something un-satisfying about them to me - less so with the twins. Something about the punch...Also, I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't have the two pair of monitors sitting here in front of me, but there is something more revealing and clear in the top end of the ProAcs. I initially want to say they're "brighter", but that comes with a bad connotation...Not brighter - more realistic. I know that's totally unhelpful...Somehow, there is more detail in the ProAcs that makes the top on the Focals seem dull. But less fatiguing at the same time. Hey - If you wanna come down and listen...come on!

There's definitely something to be said for knowing your speakers...Hey - guys made a living off of NS-10's...But where I felt like I was fighting with the Focals, I'm not fighting anymore...
