Those who own and/or have used these, what do you think? Do they crunch up in a fun way?
They've always been on the list but "Magical Mystery Tour" came on the other day and I was like "damn, those crunchy drums sound great" and now I'm GASsing hard for one of these.

Love mine. Actually very beautiful sounding most of the time. I think Sheryl Crow uses it as her vocal pre in her live rig. Yes, if you hit it with a high output condenser and gain it up, it crunches in the best way possible, but it’s by no means a one trick pony.

I've got a pair, really like them, but I usually go for nuanced tube excitement / tonality, not typically pushing it too much so far.

I have a pair (coupled to a pair of REDD ‘POP’ equalizers!)
I don’t associate the crunch you’re hearing with these preamps. You CAN run one into the other and get the “Revolution” guitar sound, but beyond that they don’t have the best breakup sound. I think it’s more likely recording to tape, then reducing to tape, and then mixing to tape, and then mastering to tape that creates the sound you’re referring to. That coupled with the Fairchild and then hitting an RS124 a half-dozen times in the process…

I guess that it what I am trying to gauge..... how much of a role it would play in achieving those type of sounds and whether or not it would be cool to buy over other things I "need". I have a Fairchild and an RS-124 here, so maybe it's a classic case of messing with what I already got rather than trying to spend more money. Ya know, the kind of subversive thoughts that will land you in the stocks @ NAMM...

With already having a Fairchild and an RS-124 the cost differential in comparison for a channel or two of Redd.47 pres (especially used) isn't all that high and you'll probably like them anyway. If was in your boat I'd go that route eventually if I could - sometimes best to try with our own ears.

You could always pick up a used Diezengoff D4, it is a Redd 47 circuit, I have 3 that I modded with NOS tubes, caps and strategically placed CC resistors, they sound absolutely killer, they behave the same as the original circuit(which turns a lot of people off) which will give you a feel for whether you want to spend even more $ on the redd
