I have the opportunity to pick up a thermionic culture Phoenix SB, in exchange for some 500 series gear, namely 2x RND 535 and a Chandler TG Opto. Value wise the cost overall is fairly similar, so it seems a fair trade.
I haven’t used the Thermionic Phoenix before but I’m definitely dying for a nice vari mu, but a bit loathe to give up the 535s in particular (I find them very useful on just about everything).. Not to mention the overall loss of an extra analog comp channel with the TG thrown in.
Presumably the Phoenix can cover enough ground I might not miss the 535s so much?
Am I crazy for considering this trade or would you pull the trigger on it?

I’d wait until you can buy a VM without selling gear you appreciate: sounds like you may appreciate the Phoenix, but that you will miss your current gear.

When I’m in situations like this, the biggest factor is figuring out what’s going to be the easiest to replace if I want it back further down the line. In this case, I would probably be leaning towards doing the trade. You don’t see nicer stuff like the TC come up for sale used very often at a good price, and that’s a good chunk of change all at once. Chances of me having that much cash available again to burn are probably going to be slim. On the other hand, you’re dumping a lot of individual 500 series units that are pretty common and come up for sale used pretty often. You can easily buy one 500 unit here or there to replace that other stuff over time if you decide you miss it.
I haven’t added up the 500 series stuffs value or know what a good deal for the TC unit would be, I have no idea if it’s a fair trade. It doesn’t sound like a bad idea though!

It's generally best not to sell A to buy B as it's sort of like - "one step back to steps forward" I have a Thermionic Phoenix (the Mastering Plus version) and I can tell you not only is it stunning on the stereo mix bus or for use in Mastering, you can also smash it hard and use it as a parallel on drums and get a huge exciting drum sound. And then it's one of THE best vocal and bass tracking compressors I've ever used and also excellent on acoustic guitar. If the Beyer M88 transformed into a compressor it would become a Thermionic Phoenix

This was my thinking also. I can get the 500 series stuff easily month on month but a used Phoenix will take ages to save up for and then I’ll have to wait for a reasonably priced/conditioned unit to hit the market. And vocal compression is also a big concern of mine as I’m not digging the Chandler or RND as much as I’d hoped for those duties (although there are worse options of course).

How do you guys trade? Like - how are you comfortable with a person you don’t know? Just curious how people look at it.

There is a reputable business here that deals with trading gear and the second hand market. They essentially act as the broker, it’s possible I’d have to throw in a small bit of cash for the trade, but nothing that would deter me from going through with it.

I only do trades in person, never done trades through the mail, but I just have them come to the house or studio or I go to them. And, some random person isn’t going to have a Phoenix compressor, and you’ll probably hit if off and have a good hang!
