Oh the ideas that come up when you put a couple of AE’s together in a bar. With all the FET 47’s at all different price points would an end address variation be cool for kick and well podcasters?

It’d certainly change the pattern Wouldn't it become more Omni when the back of the capsule is near to a boundary, like the top plate holding the capsule? Maybe a single sided capsule would work better in that case? |

I'm more of a mind for MOST mics to be side address. Besides stage hand held and maybe inside a bass drum I see no need for end address mics.

Im doing a review right now on ADK’s newer Munich 7 mic, solid state with their M7 capsule and big honking transformer inside. Only had 2 of them to do drums, ended up with one as the crotch mic getting the whole kit and one on the kick. The kick tone is just fantastic, it’s been a while since I’ve had a good M7 mic in here. It might be my favorite outside kick mic in recent memory. I think an end address kick mic based around a 47 could be really cool. My only concern (as already pointed out) is that I wouldn’t want the mic shifting more towards omni because the capsule is rotated in the body. Aesthetically and practically it could be really cool, it’s a fun idea. Personally I would loose out on having the figure 8 option, as I do that quite a lot on larger kick drums where I move the mic towards the top of the shell, and angle it a bit to deflect direct air blasts as well as reject more of the cymbals with the nulls directed towards them. I know Soyuz was teasing an end address version of the Bomblet for a while that looked really amazing and was geared more towards radio and podcast. I think they abandoned it (subsequently coming out with the 1973 instead, ore than likely), I’m wondering if things didn’t work out as well because of that arrangement. |

If the M7 inside the head would be turned, it would sound a good bit different i guess. I often put my MaxKircher 47 clone outside the kick, pointed along the front side of the set (this balances out the hihat against the rest of the set) and this alone gives an already pretty good and full sound of the set. With the right drummer, this would be enough as a mono kick mic. I arrived at this position while having the mic signal on the isolation headphones and pointing the mic around the set, works easy and if the assistants are having this on their headphones, it shows them all they ever will need about how to find a working mic position without blurb from the net.
And while i am all for a special mic for special jobs (one more mic i can justify to buy!!!) i think your usual old and merry 47 FET (or decent clones) will be fine for the job.
