I'm looking for a small/compact/light open-back with standard mini plug pair for comfortable listening without having to shove anything in my ears. Something efficient that can achieve decent volume from a phone that I can use for both checking out mixes and pleasure listening. Also, it's nice to be able to share. Don't really have a price-point in mind.

Not open-back but very comfortable and neutral are the AKG 371 that I purchased earlier this year. And not expensive.

Once you’ve tried good noise-canceling headphones for travel you won’t look back.
I’m quite happy with my Sony WH 1000xm5’s. Very comfortable, forgiving but not hyped sound.
Folks like the AirMax too, but you can’t use them wired, which seems like a big handicap to me.

I love my Sennheiser 400 pro’s. They’re very comfortable (for me) and I really like checking mixes on them. For a while I was actually doing most of my mixing on them. I could get a mix about &0% there before I had to check my monitor. Pretty affordable too.

Not high end but I remember paying pretty good money for them. There was something about how the noise cancelling seemed to mess with the air pressure in the cans and I just didn't like the feel of that. Anyone else notice that, or was it just my pair?

I guess I wasn't clear enough. I was hoping for something more throw-in-a-backpack-knock-aroundy, and smaller. I might use them to check out how a mix sounds on consumer headphones, but I'm not looking to mix with them - so I guess I do have a price point.

I’d check a mix on them, but they are probably a little forgiving/flattering to do a really good mix. That said, I’m sure one could acclimate to it if needed.

It hasn’t bothered me. In fact, I find the noise canceling a bit addictive. There’s so much random low frequency noise that you don’t notice in an average house, office, etc, that is really nice to get rid of. You can have a low volume and hear low freq details. These aren’t cheap cans though. You can find them close to 300, but maybe not something you toss in a backpack carelessly.

I just use a pair of MDR7506, but for travel I like isolation so go figure, efficient, roll up fairly small & fairly robust.

I've got an old pair of Urbanears headphones that sound a bit like what you're looking for. They were my out-in-the-streets listening phones for years and I still drag 'em out for that often. Comfy, and they fold up pretty small. The brand seems to only make one model now - when I first found them, they made a great fits-in-ear-but-not-earbud-thingy model. Now they've just got one model aimed at DJs, but pretty sure that's the same model I've got. www.urbanears.com/us/en/headphones/
