So I've just outgrown my 19" rack space (I'm using SKB portable ones). I am wondering where you buy yours? I'm looking for two kinds, specifically.
1) Barebone racks that are practical with little regard to aesthetics; and
2) Fancy racks. Those you see on nice studio pics with wood panels.
And, is there anything that elevates racks so that the first unit is at arm's length when you're sitting down, instead of being all the way on the floor?
Thanks a lot!

DIY or find a friend who can for either, what I like to do is build a 2-4 space rack below the rack and put a rack drawer there. If I had a shop space I would offer to build a knock down rack for you. Tag Tony he is an experienced builder!

Check out Grundorf Racks. They decently made (C+ in build quality), aesthetically please (B+ in looks), and about as cheap as you get for a brand new rack ((A+ for price).
I’m referring to the black wooden racks, not the carpet lined ones btw.

Look locally for computer/server racks. Same width, often sold much cheaper used. Some of them even have soundproofing and thermal management.

For the barebones type, I’ve had good luck with Seismic Audio if you’re not looking to spend too much. Not the most rugged, but also pretty good for the money. I have a 12 space with casters and a 4 space and I’ve been happy with them, but I also don’t move stuff a ton.

Truely cheap absorbing lootly cheap bare bones 0rder 4 Penn Elcom rails figure what depth you want, have your Favorite home cent cut 4 1in x 3 strips to the depth you want. Buy some 3/4 screws screw the wood either in side or out side the ends of the rack. Mark on the wood where the rack screw holes are on the face you will attach gear unscrew the screws that attach the mounting side, drill 1/2 in holes on the center of those marks. Re screw the rack rail. Congratulations you now have Eric’s absolutely cheapest easy to assemble racks. Over the years probably built 100-200 of these for broke friends and clients ( look if you spent $5k with me building you a basic rack at cost was a no brainer. I know of at least one Grammy winner who has had 4 for 30 years ( yeah I checked before posting).

So, easy to make, you can order the proper rack angle, various lengths, order wheels and a power bar with light for each one.

Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist. Racks have low resale value and they are usually 10-20% of what they cost new

www.mixingtable.com/ has been amazing. I have a studio full of their walnut racks. Very well made and excellent service.

I've built my own racks, then I get a bunch of 10-32 Allen head bolts from the local Home Depot (or they are cheaper on Amazon to get 100 or so...) and I use these or similar, for the washers. Then I never get the extraneous scratches from the screwdriver slipping off or the bolt digging in from being too tight. The most recent rack I built is 2 x 4U racks side by side, and it sits in front of me and holds the dual display setup on top and things I want quick access to in the racks.

Cool, I diy and use oak rails for a number of reasons, easy to install alignment wise, I can configure as I like without pre drilled holes dictating position, I can repair any hole with a drop of glue and a kabob stick and most importantly it gives me easy grounding isolation. I also use those hex head rubber washer wood screws to hold the rack cases, they self drill, never slip and don’t scratch the ears of the gear (they make in black), Here's some Black Screws

Check Craigslist and local if you’re not in a hurry. Twice I’ve gotten a $500-$700 rack for under $100.

The prices are so high they shocked themselves, passed out and fell off the web page😉
